Dreamed I was vacationing with
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
The launch was smoother than I thought it would be and we soon (slower than I would have expected) broke through the atmosphere and were flying through space (still without an actual Viper, just steering with my hands, my legs still stretched out in front of me). Starbuck and I docked at the space station in geosynchronous orbit and were surprised to find the normally bustling hub of activity vacant. Cautiously moving through the corridors, we eventually came across the Fury an enormous Battlestar refitting flagship which was easily 100-times the size of a Battlestar - a carrier carrier. It looked like the Space 1999 ship only with a flat landing area for up to 12-Battlestar's to dock, six on each side. Thing was, it was miniaturized (still several feet long as compared to my own size), and floating slowly through the hallways gathering information from a series of remote probes zipping throughout the space station seeking signs of life.
Starbuck pulled me aside, out of sight, and in a hushed voice explained the dire nature of what was transpiring - The Fury was fully automated and had gone bad, hunting humans and Battlestars. She wanted me to go to the Viper bay, launch back down to the planet, and bring the Galactica (which was parked on the below planet) into space where she would work on getting the crew back together to man the Battlestar and neutralize the threat.
I took off around a bulkhead knowing good and well I had no idea where the Viper bay was. During my excursion I dodged probes (which were moving a lot faster than the Fury though they didn't seem to be as intelligent), jumped into and out of frustrating elevators (some which went only up, some which went only down, and some which seemed to be just rooms that didn't move at all). I also ran across several crew members who were also hiding, one young man who showed me how to cross my arms and jump on a net which opened into a slide quickly taking pilots to the Viper bay!
After a less than glamours landing on the Viper bay floor, I was detained by two security agents who were at a loss to explain what was happening, but unmoved by my story and simply following their last known orders. At some point Starback arrived in the Viper bay and out-ranked them and I was given clearance to complete my mission and placed in a Viper in a launch tube.
My last thought was wondering how I was going to single-handedly get an entire Battlestar off the ground and into space, as surely an entire crew was necessary for that level of operation.

While in D.C. last summer visiting
photogoot we ran across a store which carried some very fine Scotch Whisky's. And by "fine" I mean bottles which were over 30-years old and ran into the four digit price range. That's why I was surprised when I found a bottle of Tomintoul which had been maturing in a cask since 1966 for only $337.
I asked the owner why it was so inexpensive. He explained that since scotch whisky which has sat so long loses a lot of its strength, they usually end up selling that to blenders - like Johnny Walker. That's where this batch was headed. When it got to the importer in Houston, he tried it - and found that once he put a little water in it, it was fantastic! Yes, they're selling this bottle at "Cask Strength" (which, according to my research puts it at between 50 and 60 percent (100-120 proof).
They also had a 30-year Glenlivit for only $175. Had it been Glenfiddich I don't know that I would have been able to resist. My wife even asked me, "Are you going to buy it? You know it won't be here long."
*sigh*
No, I didn't get it.
And today, I've completed my set of BSG die-cast ships which adorn my office with these last two I found today in Azle:

One is an "Elite" Mark-II, the other, a retro painted Mark-VII. I now have them all. That is...until they release something new.

Got home last night and wife was already sauteing the onions in olive oil. She added a can of thick coconut milk, tomato paste, diced tomatoes and a healthy portion of red curry. I browned cubed mutton then dumped it in the mixture to let it all cook together. It was served with nan bread over rice & lentels. We followed this with a cigar and a glass of Kansan Spatlese. In a word, perfect!

Picked up BSG Season 2.0 & 2.5 today at Best Buy. Can anyone guess what I'll be doing this weekend? The only thing I lack at this point is the US Release of BSG Season One, as I picked up the UK Release when it came out.
I require the new USAF digital tiger-stripe Airman Battle Uniform.
photogoot can you look into this for me? Just tell me how much and I'll pick it up when I'm there. I'll include a 10% finder's fee for the person who can make this happen. XXL please. Thanks.

I had this...cousin. He was a 'C' student at a rural high school, and decided he wanted to be a surgeon and was going to apply to John Hopkins. I explained you don't just apply to John Hopkins, that you required excellent grades from a well established and scholastically superior institute of higher learning, and that he would never even get that far without first completing several years at an adaquate university first. I suggested that right after high school, he apply to the local Junior College, and begin to study and apply himself so he could realize his dream.
His response? "Screw that, I'm not going to Junior College. I'll apply directly to John Hopkins and if they turn me down I'll just get a job at Wal-Mart."
I doubt even they would hire him...

1999. I was the Network Operations Supervisor of a Data Center. We had a problem with one of the Sun computers where we required the manufactures technical support. I asked one of my staff to get them on the phone and go over what solution was required. A little later she told me, "I called Sun, and one of my friends who's seem this kind of thing before, Sun is supposed to call me back, but I have a prior appointment, so if the phone rings, will you handle it?"
"No problem." I assured her.
"Ok, thanks." She left. The phone rang. The guy on the phone asked for her, and I told him I was her supervisor and was handling the issue while she was away, what did he have for me? "Not much." was the answer.
"I'm sorry?" I inquired? Paid support is hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, I expected a lot more than, Not Much.
"Have you tried searching online?" He asked.
I'm seething...online? The support contract outlines 4-hour on-site response to any outage. We had 40 of these boxes representing a substantial cost, not to mention the very large price of support! HAVE I TRIED SEARCHING ONLINE? I took a deep breath, and through gritted teeth, explained as calmly as I could, that I had no intention of searching online for a problem I have asked him to look into. "Do not call here again until you've found a solution." He was very flustered, but agreed, and hastily hung-up.
The girl comes back in and says, "What did you find out? Did my friend call back?"
"Sun called and suggested I try to search online if you can believe it. I read him the riot act." She looked at me in a way that made me uncomfortable. "What?" I asked.
"I haven't called Sun yet."
Uh-oh. I must've mis-understood. That was her friend I spoke to that way!
Things were strained between us after that.
To this day I always go above and beyond on my phone etiquette.

Did a Google search on "comics 12205" <-- the zip code I'm at currently. It gave me an address, and today after work, I walked in. "May I help you?" The guy behind the counter asks.
"I'm looking for BSG." I say.
"I don't know what you mean." He replies.
I've been getting this a lot lately. I repeat the question, this time tying it into the reason I walked into to the store, and the role I expect him to play: "I'm looking for the BSG comic books." Why the hell else would I be here?
"We don't sell comic books." He tells me. Now it's my turn to stop and stare. He continues, "There's a place down the street on the left that sells comic books." I glance around the store.
"You were the search engine's first hit for comics in this area." I explain.
"Yeah, we get that a lot. I don't know why."
Neither do I.
We make our way down the street and I'm asked by the goth girl behind the counter, "May I help you?"
I try this again. "I'm looking for BSG."
She jumps up and leads me to them. I had no idea there were multiple covers for each. I grab one photo cover of each, and one comic cover of each, Issue Number 0 and Issue Number 1. Then, with a little prodding from
drax0r, I watched all the 'webisodes.' I also haven't been able to find series two yet of the BSG die-cast, though I've been looking, and even
galinda822 checks for me when she hits Target. All in good time I suppose.

I'm flying out tomorrow morning. My boss and I are on the same aircraft to Atlanta, Bill flies out a couple hours after we do. I want to drink a little beer tonight while I'm packing. Then it's back to work Thursday morning. What a hell of a whirlwind trip.

BSG starts again October 6th
The second half of the second season of BSG will be released on DVD the day after my birthday in the awkwardly named box set - Battlestar Galactica - Season 2.0, vol 2 (2.5)

Slytherin! You're classy to the core, favoring the traditionally finest things the world has to offer. While you may or may not be evil *wink* you certainly have the power and attitude to get what you want. You're clever as all heck, and tend to be a couple steps ahead of even the most astute Ravenclaw.

Update as of June 2006 -
Uncle Lonnie told me that George was given an honorable discharge and records were expunged. Pat verified this and said there was a small wallet size honorable discharge card he carried in his wallet. I have not found it yet. All the written articles make him sound guilty but Lonnie was there when it happened. I just discovered this when I started work on the Howton scrapbook in May.

I support this, and I'll tell you why. I want him to start his own evil empire, and live atop a volcano in an elaborate multi-billion-dollar insane-architect-designed mansion. I'll call him Extreme Chancellor Phallax if that's what he desires, and he can call me, "Number Two." I'll sit at his right hand as we eat wild hog that we hunt with with our newly designed super-secret weapons. I think I really just want to sit on the beach of this island and drive those little 6-wheeled buggies he'll no doubt have to get around on. Maybe we'll finally build that hovercraft out of vaccuum-cleaner parts? I dunno, I just think it would be cool.
Track 17, "Prelude to War" from the BSG: Season 2 soundtrack is my new favorite track. I don't know how I initially missed this gem, but I'm enjoying it quite a bit.
In researching a user issue today, I found what was probably THE information needed to solve my problem on Google, this link: Acrobat Reader won't launch...in pdf format? *eyeroll*
And if that's not bad enough, I ran across this statement: ...this is the most least likely circumstance, but still possible. Most least...huh?

Three new BSG toys for my desk have just been announced, I'll submit my own pictures when I get them (this may mean another whirlwind trip to Target in the middle of the day, galinda):

And speaking of BSG, even though I listened to my new soundtrack all weekend, it was not the most conducive of environments in which to actually enjoy music. I did, however, get a good five minutes of listening done on the drive into work this morning (when I had a 75 minute one-way commute, this was never an issue). Allegro so far is my favorite. A mixture of last seasons The Shape of Things to Come & Passacaglia and yet, so very complex. Its hard to explain the emotions that particular piece invokes, and I'm sure its partly where I was in life when the previous two songs were released, the admiration of the complexity in that composition, and the nostalgia of the other two songs...I could never be a composer, but I so enjoy the fruits of their labor. Black Market is unlike anything on the previous two albums - yet very enjoyable (I prefer the scoring over the episode!) but I found I didn't like A Promise to Return as much as I wanted to; especially being a string quartet.
In other news, I nearly deleted Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire from iTunes and snapped my disc in half. I was initially excited to see Patrick Doyle take the reins on this project (I loved Needful Things) but the occasional break in score with the horrid rock tracks intertwined broke my concentration too much to enjoy it. I think I'll delete those tracks, and burn a new disc to replace the one in the jewel-case. *shiver*
Did absolutely nothing Sunday, and it was fantastic. Well, almost absolutely nothing. I did run over to galinda's to work on an ongoing project with her (turn a handmade entertainment center into a desk) but was stopped halfway when I realized I required my circular saw, which is still packed away somewhere. Then I spent several hours on and off deleting a trojan from my XP box which I myself put there. Fun, fun. I ran across an issue I haven't yet solved with my iTunes. I was updating album art (long overdue) and came across an album (Independence Day) that would not 'take' the art. Further investigation revealed that I could change all the other fields, until I went to play them, then they reverted back to the original import information. Other than that, I didn't do anything Sunday. Watched Sci-Fi's Arabian Nights and was pleased to see James Callis (Baltar) playing Prince Ahmed...
At the St. Louis zoo this weekend, it was packed. And with people of varying ages and socio-economic backgrounds. Of all the thousands of people there, I was among the few under 40 who didn't have a tattoo. When asked why I don't have a tattoo, I usually explain that that I wanted a way to express my individuality and make me unique. I get odd looks sometimes, because that's why most people do get tattoos. The funny thing is, by doing so, they become the majority, and just like everyone else. Funny how that works.
Picked up Alien Resurrection today.
Grilled perfect salmon for dinner, and had a marvelous Kansan Spatelese with it. I hate questions such as, "If you were stranded on a desert island and could only have one [fill in the blank] for the rest of your life, what would it be?" I hate these because I am such a diverse person, and I know whatever I chose I would eventually become disenchanted with over time. Unlike most people however, I have had enough variety in some things, that I know exactly what I would choose in some catagories.
Picked up two cars from the Cartoon Network's Hot Wheels Acceleracers series, both from Team 'Metal Maniacs' the Hollowback and Rivited:

SWEET! Confirmation at 2228 hours that my Bear McCreary autographed soundtrack is ON IT'S WAY!!! Critics have called his last one (Season One) a score, and this one, an album. Apparently its much richer in depth than his last one. My review of the preview tracks can be found here. I await with eager anticipation.

I have an immediate need for all four Alien scores, and I have
swashbuckler332 to thank for this. After reading swashbuckler's revisited mix album, it dawned on me I didn't actually own any of the soundtracks! All my Alien music is on Telarc discs - bits and pieces you understand. Thus begins my quest.
Apparently, the first film is out of print. Damn. The horrifically commuted "Alien Trilogy" soundtrack looks like crap, but I did find the 1999 release DVD which contains the full score as a separate audio track on the DVD for under $10 at Amazon. Thanks for the heads up, again, swashbuckler!
The second film comes in a remastered 'second edition' score which I will have to sneak by the wife to purchase, and the third film will be a sneak as well. I figure in a month I might have them all. I can get away with ordering the DVD because I have the middle two films on laserdisc, and she wants me to replace all my laserdiscs with DVD's. THAT'S going to be a chore. I'll probably never get rid of my Matrix laserdisc - one of the final releases on that media.
The fourth film's score is $4 used on Amazon. Wow.
I'm a little obsessive this way, you know.

And I'm now going to go out and purchase Homeworld 2, a game I've never before played, based on THIS alone. If you still don't get it, watch the trailer. Wow. Also, Firefly writer Jane Espenson will be writing an episode for BSG Season Three. Wow again. I don't know how I'm going to be able to contain myself until all this goodness comes to fruition. Click the image for a direct link to the trailer:

Rec'd a nice gift this past weekend,
galinda822 apparently tired of hearing be bitch about not having Office Space to watch with her...bought me the Special Edition release! Woo-hoo; now we're cooking with fire! Perhaps we'll get a chance to watch it together during Friday's Movie Night? Thanks galinda! I'll grill up something special for the occation ;)

I watch in amazement how they always manage to clear the obstacles. Then, he doesn't! He runs into a telephone pole! I watch nervously as it sways. I already have the car in reverse. Amazingly, HE DOESN'T STOP! He starts tearing the forward rear axle OFF THE TRUCK! Then - BAM! the tire explodes and I jump in my seat. I've already checked behind me and I'm moving backwards...

For all you non-soundtrack types, that would be Bear McCreary, who took over from and worked with Richard Gibbs of the mini-series. What might you expect to hear on this second season album? Here are my notes on the few preview tracks provided:
I for one, can't wait!

Here's the link for your own copy and to give the preview tracks a listen!

Updated Firefox on teh max0r which fixed the gif viewing issue.
Watched Ultimate Avengers with my son, which was pretty damn good. I wasn't planning on actually paying attention when I put it on for him, but it was great.
Wrote a little script and made a cron entry on xirr to rotate my banner picture on LiveJournal.
Grilled chicken.
galinda822 came for a nice visit.
Mowed the lawn.
Played countless hours of Hot Wheels with my boy.
Brought all primary systems down at J:42 yesterday and swapped the master bedroom and the office. Miraculously, my clock started working again and everything was back up by 1900.
Installed a new MFP for my wife on the XP uber-box, and shared it out only to discover that OSX can only connect to OSX-shared printers. I assume the same can be said for connecting it to teh max0r and trying to connect to it via XP.
For the first time in a month, considering going to be at 2200 so I can be well rested for my day tomorrow. I haven't played DS2 in a week, nor even cracked my new Strategy Guide...
Remember the documentary of the Galactica by Lucy Lawless? Remember the theme music of the clip they showed? It was the 70's original theme. It's included here on the first track as Colonial Anthem
There's an Allegro on track five which is in the same orchestral style of, and contains some of the same bars as our past favorites The Face of the Shape to Come and Passacaglia.
Track eight, Pegasus at first sounds kinda gay, like 'Endless Love' until I remembered the scene where they first discovered Pegasus and everyone was disembarking onto Galactica; very exciting suddenly as I filled with the emotion of the moment.
Lords of Kobol is the first vocal track (track 9) on the disc and as is all their vocal tracks, in some foreign tongue - but nothing like the mini-series fav To Kiss or Not to Kiss, harder, and with more force. Oh, and electric guitars too. Pretty cool, it was from the episode 'Pegasus' but I couldn't place it.
So Roslin and Adama (track 13) starts off simply with solo synth piano and a solo violin. It adds a couple of acoustic guitars and maybe a cello which crescendo's into something reminiscent of Firefly. Pretty cool.
Prelude to War (track 17) is a very fast-paced piece with violins, snare drums (on nearly all battle themes) and bigger drums. Here Bear goes back to his ethnic drum line but the addition of the snare rolls behind the frantic violins makes it very exciting.
Track 18 (Reuniting the Fleet) is the same Irish-themed track (6) on Season One (A Good Lighter) with the addition of drums, snare, and a bass.
Black Market is a middle-eastern-esque piece which starts with classical guitar and ends with electric guitar and drums. This is the last track, track 23.
I for one, can't wait!

Tivo'd four movies last night, burned one, have 10 more to burn, downloaded, created, printed, cut and inserted five DVD covers for a total of 20, and I have 10 more to create. Thirty days until I turn off all my movie channels.
Never got that Nokia cable to work. Asses.
I think my Phillips multimedia player is going out.
The Magnavox is doing a superb job and I'm happy with the quality of the recordings if they're set to SP (2-hour) but I have several movies which were recorded at 2.5-hours & 3-hours. The darker scenes are the ones which disapointed me. Oh, and my recorder is black...

SomeBritInMass and his wife were pondering Daisy's ability to capture and bring TWO bunnies up the deck without claws, and they settled on what I consider the most plausible theory yet: A Romulan cloaking device!
( Poem for galinda )
Further news on the new BSG series here.

Anatomy of the poem: The first stanza expresses how external forces can influence us, in this case, negatively. The second stanza touches on how we, as individuals crave more than being pawns to said influences, demand it even! The third stanza shows our resignation to these influences, followed in the fourth stanza by the usually shallow and egotistical belief that one can overcome one's circumstances; knowing full well they always have and always will fail. The last stanza deals entirely with the ultimate outcome of those external forces, each in their own way.
Also, I've decided that needing to urinate everytime you mention it's time for a scooby-snack is not a psychosomatic response, rather, it's the 1-litre of water I intake hourly between our breaks.

I put my coffee cup directly under the coffee maker this morning to fill my cup. It's stronger that way.

The F-15's were taking off this morning from the Air National Guard side of Saint Louis-Lambert Airport. It makes quite a racket. "Oh those planes making all that noise." I hear. My reply? "I don't mind it one bit. Sounds like...freedom."
Mama always said you'd be...
I'm really disappointed in the quality of recordings I get with my console DVD recorder. Of course this could have been what Tony was referring to when he told me he wasn't pleased with his Magnavox, but who really knows what Tony's ever talking about:
drax0r: I don't like the magnavox
EricHowton: Why not?
drax0r: I just don't.
EricHowton: Does it not work?
drax0r: It works.
EricHowton: So what is it exactly you don't like about it?
drax0r: meh

Rec'd my data cable today to move my contact list from my old phone to my new one. It's pretty sweet what the suite can do. Apparently, I can also convert mp3's to ringtones. I'll have to play with that one...

Oh NICE! It connected to my old phone and backed up my contact list to the PC, but now will not connect to either my new phone or my old phone. Hence the title of my livejournal account, "Nothing is ever as easy as it sounds." Asses. I fscking hate USB software.

So, I had this idea, that I could make my own online blog quiz for you guys. Something less gay tha n most of them out there. But so far, all I've been able to come up with, are gay meme's! YOU get to fill in the questions, YOU get to fill in the possible choices, BUT THE ANSWERS MUST ALL BE RANDOMLY GENERATED! I was looking for something with some if/then statements so I could come up with something accurate (kinda like that O/S quiz on
ximo's page..) Sucks something fierce. I'm just not looking hard enough. Maybe Tony could write me one in perl.
With a blue moon in your eyes!

"Caprica" will be set more than 50 years prior to the events of "Battlestar Galactica" and focus on the lives of two families -- the Adamas (ancestors of future Galactica commander William) and the Graystones. Humankind's Twelve Colonies are at peace and on the verge of a technological breakthrough: the first Cylon.

My large, declawed cat, Daisy brought my wife a present this morning. Two of them, actually. Bunnies. How she managed them both, no one knows. She's slowing down these last few years, doesn't have quite the energy she once had. But brought us two bunnies nonetheless. At least we now know she still loves us.

Monday and Tuesday have been unusually slow in the office. And we've had much cooler weather. This combination has put me in a very good mood. My days have only been marred by the lack of
drax0r's online presence. He's been having his own issues at work. Today, however, my conference call schedule is from 0800-1200; 1330-1500. Damn!

Do it.
The Cluck comes out at night,

I like my BSG toys. At first, the Viper was my favorite, as it is the most highly and accurately detailed. But the Galactica is just so awesome - so imposing. I think it my be my favorite now.

The most amusing part to all of this, is how instead of enriching the quality of his comments to further our own intellectual debates with each other and ourselves, he's been denegrated to village-idiot status. Hey, whatever works - and he's much funnier this way regardless.

It's amazing what a full eight-hours of sleep will do for the human body. I feel alive, awake, excited...fantastic even. Or perhaps that's just the coffee?
Everything that follows is a result of what you see here.
Took the wife for Indian last night. She had the minced curry lamb, I had the hottest thing on the menu, Lamb Vindaloo. Yes, my brow was sweating.
I'm sorry. My responses are limited. You must ask the right questions.
At work we're considering the possibility of building a robotic version of one our guys out of bluetooth automatic handset lifters and power bricks. The Jayson, our mad-scientist of the group, is scribbling the details on napkins now. I'm just afraid he's going to have the robot do his evil bidding, instead of just deploying laptops.
I trust your judgement.
I still need to learn IPchains and configure my new slackware 'router' at home, but have been so busy doing everything else, its kind of fallen to the wayside. What I require is more time.
But then our interactions have never been entirely normal. Wouldn't you agree?
I have no idea what today will hold, but it has been eerily slow here this morning. If the entire day passes in the same thread, I won't be upset. Today will be the second day in a row of NOT watching The Sopranos, as my wife enjoyed her sleep so much last night, that she wants to try again tonight. She doesn't feel as if she's quite caught up yet. We finished Season Two, so the next episode will the season premier of Season Three.
I'm sorry. My responses are limited. You must ask the right questions.
I'd also like you to meet my new best-friend: Pro Truth. He's pretty cool, as he has a xanga site he doesn't post on. Rather, he goes around passing righteous judgment on people whom he disagrees with, threatening them with hellfire and damnation! What fun! Recently, he attacked ProfessorTom, so I felt justified in defecating on his site! I love how by simply following some asshole's link, you can enrich your own life. It's not that I oppose attacking Tom, quite the contrary - it's one of my favorite pasttimes! But for some stranger to do it? That riles me up. Might I suggest some of my readers check out my new best-friends site as well?
That, detective, is the right question. Program terminated.

Also, I just returned from Best Buy, and yes, I picked up Dungeon Siege II!

drax0r loves intellectual debate. He is also the most generous, selfless person I know, who gives without any thought of reward. He is fiercely loyal and very well read. He can speak intelligently on any number of topics and is well versed in poetry and literature. His Star Wars persona: QUI-GON JINN. Tony loves cats, walks on the beach, and quiet nights fragging unknown assailants online. drax0r is very impulsive and embraces self-improvement. drax0r is a: REALIST
ehowton prides himself on being well travelled and uses the basis of his experience as the guide for his future decisions. He calculates his every move by contemplating the outcome of every possible scenario before acting. This is quite tedious and frustrates often the impulsive drax0r. ehowton's Star Wars persona: STORMTROOPER. ehowton loves cats and spending what little free time he has with his wife and children. He makes tough sacrifices for the betterment of his family. ehowton is an: OPTIMIST

Dreamed of BSG Season Three last night. Funny enough, it took place in Boyd?
Bought the Firefly series on DVD. And Serenity. I can't wait. First on the list for Carla, Lori and I when we return! Hooray Carla!
Try to remember how to set up a modem in Win98. Yeah, I know. Replaced my mother-in-law's 15" burned out monitor with my 17" Sun CRT. The IE Browser was too old to support windowsupdate.com, so I had to download IE 6 SP1 (10MB) over a 24k connection. Fun. An hour and a half for that, and two hours to download updates. Wanted to eat a bullet.
Went to my new favorite cigar store in Wichita, and, because I didn't have the kids, I finally perused the liquor store attached to it. I HAVE NEVER BEEN ANYWHERE THAT HAD THE QUALITY AND VARIETY OF BEERS I FOUND HERE. Couple that with the fact that I met the most knowledgeable beer lover I have ever met behind the counter, and well, that was a recipe for success.
The Czechs invented the pilsner. It's the best in the world and I praise them for it. Thier Klaster Premium Winter Lager however is...well, they should stick to the pilsner. Understand, it's 29 bazillion times better than Bud, for example. But not quite the full-bodied sensation Pilzner Urquell is. I bought it because it was on sale for $3.99 a six-pack. Unheard of.
I've had the Franziskaner before, both overseas and here in the states. Mostly their hefe-weizen. I felt comfortable in asking if they carried a krystal weizen (which they haven't carried in nearly two years) but was suggested this 'Club Weisse' as their best second. It isn't, but it's an honorable attempt.

It was so nice seeing mom and dad again after seven months. I didn't want to let either of them go. The children were very excited, and begged to stay the night with Grammie and PapaDaddy - which was a good thing, because that was exactly the plan!
As we finally left my folks, we thought we'd drive by our old house. It was too dark to really see it by then, so we stopped by to see our old neighbors (neighbor #1)...who don't live there anymore! But our other neighbor's, (neighbor #2) who had moved two years ago, moved back! Into neighbor #1's house! My naming convention is confusing, because everyone is named 'Dave.'
Speaking of Dave's, David & Wendy, Tony, and my wife and I had dinner and drinks at David's Friday night. It was a fantastic reunion with plenty of hugs to go around. Then the drinking ensued. I provided a 6-pack (minus the one I drank!) of the Klaster Premium Winter Lager, David had a 12-pack of Michelob Ultra, and Tony showed up with a 12-pack of Coke because he'd left a bottle of Maker's previously. I was also eying David's brand-spanking new fifth of Crown Reserve ;) David gave Tony and I goodie bags filled with phone-geek accessories, and received from him, a beautiful plaque of Darth Vader and Darth Maul signed by the actors which portrayed them. The three of us spent the evening after the womenfolk went to bed playing Elite Force II, picking up where we left off seven months ago. Wendy gave me stern warnings to have David in bed before 0400. I believe he was in bed at 0358...I know I was! And David, yes we did kill your 12-pack if you consider the single beer I had from it. Dude, you drank the rest yourself!

It's 0715 and I'm at a conference table in the hotel with 9 women. I'm the only male. This has been my existence since I started with this new job. I've been the only man at Tupperware parties, but that was to be expected. Last week, all the women in the front office of my son's school were looking past me, as I was the only father which showed up for his parent-teacher conference.
A rather large bat was flying around in circles trapped in the rather cavernous ballroom. You don't see that everyday.
Here's SomeBritInMass just prior to his operation. He taped the note to his gut, under his surgical gown as a surprise for the doctors. It reads, "Docs, Just so we understand, it's my prostrate, not me balls! Ok?" When he awoke, the following message was beside him, "Sorry Mate, but we were laughing so hard we nicked your willy. Doesn't look like it will matter much though! Cheers!"

Sitting dead center over Houston Street in Fort Worth looking over North Side. It's a nice view, the hotel spans two city blocks. This is the largest hotel I've ever been in. I feel like I've walked 14 miles today. Well, I did walk to the Flying Saucer where I got a draught pint of Pilzner Urquell for the Monday-night price of $2.50. Can't beat that! Staying with David & Wendy tonight, as he's 5 minutes away, I'm exhausted, and I have to be back here early in the morning.

I'm gonna make like a baby and head out Wednesday after work. Texas or bust.
Whenever my eldest has to poop, he hollers, "To the rocketship!" No one knows why.
Watched the new Dr. Who Friday. It was a poor substitute for BSG not being on.
teh max0r is set up at work for troubleshooting a board member's iBook tomorrow.
I was looking for a BSG RSS feed.
It's nice to be able to ease into your work week.

I miss my couch.
I may not be able to leave Mleko and Speedbump behind.
I may not be able to leave Tony behind.
As Mr. Sloan always says, there is no "I" in team, but there is an "I" in pie. And there's an "I" in meat pie. Meat is the anagram of team.... I don't know what he was talking about.

Friday night was BSG night, following probably the worst week I've had at work since I started. Now, let me first qualify that. I had director on my ass all week long, making my group look incompetent as each new request from her went to my management team, in the form of a reprimand to the quality of our previous work, as we worked to compile a spreadsheet of information she had asked for. What a pain. Sure, we'd identified inaccuracies in the database, but we were working to correct that. It wasn't going to happen overnight. On the flip side, now that I am no longer responsible for the National Security of this nation, and no one's life is in imminent danger, I refuse to overreact to a spreadsheet. I mean, I'm going to do my job, and do the best job I can do everyday, but freaking-out over a spreadsheet just isn't my idea of sanity.
Back to BSG night.
somebritinmass had turned me on to "French 75" a drink composed of 1-part gin and 4-parts champagne. He warns me though, "It's got quite a kick, so be careful." We sit to watch BSG and I make three, one for myself, and one each for
catttitude and ...who don't care for them. So I drink them all. And pass out on the couch. The next evening, I try a new drink. It's called WATER. And oh, what a sweet drink that is. From this point forward, I will never mix gin and champagne.
Watched Underworld and Mr. & Mrs. Smith this weekend. Mr. & Mrs. Smith was a delightful mix between True Lies, War of the Roses, and Prizzi's Honor, but Underworld disappointed me after reading about the rich gifts both vampires and lycanthopes have and how they battle each other and use their differing powers to both hurt each other and heal themselves in Laurell K. Hamilton's "Anita Blake Vampire Hunter" series of books. Underworld had the two groups simply shooting guns at each other. How very disapointing.
Got to my hotel to find that my room had flooded. Fortunately, none of my computers or electronics were damaged, however, they had no suites available in which we could move into. So, we picked everything up off the soaked floor, packed somme clean clothes, and moved in with Carla. The manager is going to call me tomorrow with my options, however, the lady at the front desk assured me I would not be charged for this day. Wow. I have to move 1000 pounds of household goods and food and clothing to sustain 4 people, but I'll save $57.99. Just between you and me, I'd pay twice that to avoid moving.
Oh, and for those who found this entry a tad verbose, I implore you to check out ProfessorTom's single-word blog entry. He's out to change the blogging community with his bold new vision.

My son asked me several weeks ago, "Is there such thing as an Orange Power Ranger?" Based on the long running series, there is not, and I let him know as much. He then mentioned the possibility, based on an Japanese anime clip I downloaded for him last year showing an obese Yellow Ranger flanked by a Purple Ranger. I had to give him that. So I begin my research. Apparently, S.P.D. was the first series to feature an Orange Ranger, but it was only a fabrication of Boom, the "Official Gadget Tester" at S.P.D. Headquarters, who was a ranger washout at the Academy. His parents were coming to visit, and he'd never told them he'd flunked out of ranger school. So the team helped propagate the myth that he was the Orange Ranger while his parents were in town. Google had no images of this abomination, but I was able to find the episode on torrent. Unfortunately, the on-again-off-again single seed maintained no greater than 1K download speeds for several weeks. It finished sometime overnight. This impeccable timing, as my wife and daughter are planning a Girls Night out, overnight with a coworker, leaving my son excited for a "Boys Night" with Daddy this weekend. He's had his list planned for a week now: Watch Power Rangers, play Power Rangers, eat Taco Bell, and watch "Good Ole Boys" (what he calls The Dukes of Hazzard.) He's very excited about the Orange Ranger episode (Episode 16).
For several years, I drove a 1976 Am General Jeep DJ-5. That's right, the right-hand drive mail jeep version. Because it was an AM General, I thought if I painted it McDonnell-Douglas olive drab, it too, could look like military Hummer. So I did. It didn't look like a Hummer, no, oddly enough, it looked like an olive drab mail jeep. That puzzled me for years. Point is, we just bought a $38,000 house for $85,000, and I want to paint it like a half-million dollar house I saw on a glossy placard for Behr paint. At least this time I won't be disappointed when it still looks like a $38,000 house.

Just finished the BSG mini-series. It rocked - and, the music was fantastic. Starting Season One now. Listening to "The Shape of Things to Come" as a prelude to the show. I was trying to compile rot13 and elinks on my Solaris box. Both failed on gettext. I'll have to track that down. Was supposed to help build out a SPARCstation-5 this evening, about 45 minutes ago, actually, but the ass never showed on AIM - so an episode then bedtime for me!
Thanks for checking the water in my humidor David!

Ate mostly cheese for dinner. Is that wrong? I had a nice salad for lunch, but that was 7 hours ago, and I was starving. Drove to Wichita this weekend - smoked a cuban on the way there. It was fantastic - thanks Phil! I think I'll give up scooby-snack for awhile. Have my eye on a new humidor and about 100 cigars. That should last me awhile. Had a good time with the kids, we went to the fall carnival and rode all the rides. I think Chamber of Secrets is the best Harry Potter score. Lori sat and watched every episode of BSG Season Two, back-to-back, uninterrupted. I am watching the mini-series again, as a prelude to watching Season One followed by Season Two. Tony just picked up the US DVD Box Set of Season One. This is going to be a hard week to recover from. As I was driving to Wichita, I noticed the East-bound traffic from Kansas City to St. Louis was pretty much grid-locked. For 200 miles. I decided then and there I was going to drive back early Sunday morning. I went to bed at 1945 and got out of bed at 0100. I figure I got a good three hours of sleep. Drove to the hotel, showered, shaved, put on my coat and tie, and went to work. Ten and a half hours later, here I sit, gut full of cheese, and wishing I could just pass out.

This soundtrack is awesome. I can't get enough of it. It is so moving, so touching, so exciting! Of course having just watched the season finale again, I'm sure the excitement is still present everywhere else within me.
Come to think of it, I like this soundtrack so much, I am now running a SHOUTcast stream from teh max0r to my SPARC box in Texas which is broadcasting it. That'll do pig, that'll do. I knew I was smarter than "...the only way to stream iTunes is via a PVC..."
There is a track entitled Battlestar Operatica which is, in the finest tradition of Italian opera, a really well done and beautiful operatic aria...In Italian even! As I am fan of the genre, I was moved at how well this composer, Bear McCreary was able to, in this day and age, embody the soul of the great composers Puccini, Verdi, Donizetti and yet still create a non-classical kick-ass score. Most of us who enjoy opera, do not understand Italian. The lyrics aren't what we're after. In the aforementioned beautifully haunting aria, the producers were kind enough to both print, and translate the Italian for us. I present to you, the English lyrics to Battlestar Operatica
I wanted to get some sleep, but SHOUTcast doesn't just compile itself, and this isn't some x86 linux hack where I run both the trans and serv off the same server...granted, that usually does work right out of the box. I also updated http://quark.darkvoyager.com with some more links, and for me, more links means more banners, so I had to create a handful of them this evening as well. I'm off to bed. And to all, a good night!

Woe upon your Cylon heart There's a toaster in your head And it wears high heels Number Six calls to you The Cylon Detector beckons Your girlfriend is a toaster Woe upon your Cylon heart Alas, disgrace! Alas, sadness and misery! The toaster has a pretty dress Red like its glowing spine Number Six whispers By your command

Tony has beseech-ed me to download and watch the three BSG episodes I have missed. I have complied. The purchase of the Season Two DVD Box Set is high on my list of things to acquire once it is available for purchase.
WARNING - SPOILERS!
( Season 2, Episode 8: Final Cut )
( Season 2, Episode 9: Flight of the Phoenix )
( Season 2, Episode 10: Pegasus )
I just discovered that the soundtrack to BSG Season One has been released. I'm leaving right now to pick it up.

Crawled in bed last night after my shower and the wife was laying in bed reading. I just, watched her. Thinking of how lucky I was to have her, and then of all the women that just weren't right in the months leading up to our getting together. I started grinning a stupid grin, not being able to imagine myself with anyone else, and wondering what I had done right to get her. She drops her book in a huff, turns to me and says, "How long are you going to fucking stare at me?"
What a sweetheart...
Saw a Season Two commercial for Battlestar Galactica yesterday at the movies. I was quite excited. Apparently, they're going to show all of Season One back-to-back tomorrow on Sci-Fi, and NBC is going to broadcast three episodes in High-Definition this month. Season Two starts the 15th.
Drove to Wichita Friday after work, the beginning of the holiday weekend. Had I been able to come up with anything to do whatsoever, I would have used that as an excuse to not drive to Wichita, as traffic was horrendous! It took me two and a half hours to get to the Oklahoma State Line, traveling I-35 the entire way. My normally 5-hour trip took seven. Well, at least I didn't feel rushed. I just put some good tunes on, sucked on some moist smokeless tobacco, and set the cruise at 69. (Usually I set it at 74, but Oklahoma State Troopers were out in force!)
Mostly rode three wheelers as DETAILED HERE.

The absolute best part of a three-day weekend is usually the 4-day work week which follows. Alas, in IT we usually end up working 5-days worth of work in 4-days, which doesn't make it any more pleasant.
Wife wanted to see Episode III again while it was still in theaters, so took her to see it yesterday while folks enjoyed the children. Dinner at Zio's (I had the cheese ravioli on a bed of linguine, half covered in alfredo, half in marinara), followed by a clandestine meeting with MADDOG. You see, I have acquired a mac mini in a game of chance. This mac mini has already had a memory upgrade more impressive than even you could imagine! And David Roberston at work has overclocked his CPU to 1.5GHz (his research turned up that both the 1.25 and 1.42 model use the 1.5 CPU, which is disabled by a single solder-point). The only thing lacking is a decent harddrive. As neither myself, nor my friends deal in IDE, this has been an arduous task. My minimum requirements were 8MB cache and 7200rpm. Well, MADDDOG found a brand new 80GB Maxtor, out the door at Office Depot, for $40. What a pal! Now I'm tracking down an external firewire-400 enclosure. Sure a Hitachi Travelstar laptop drive would have been easier, but at $185, my implementation will work equally well at one-third the cost!
Just got off the phone with a client. "My laptop went into hibernation, AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!"
"Push the power button." I offered.
"I did - nothing happened!"
"Is it plugged in?" I ask.
"I think so."
"Can you check it?"
"Sure."
"Oh, that's it, it's working now!"
"Fantastic."
*sigh*

HIGGS! Has returned from vacation this week!
BlackLadyInPhilly: I have a job interview in MO.
EricHowton: Where in Missouri?
BlackLadyInPhilly: Kansas City.
EricHowton: Sweet! You can drive to Wichita on the weekends and we can visit.
BlackLadyInPhilly: Are there even black people in Kansas?
EricHowton: I think I saw one once.
BlackLadyInPhilly: Oh, you got jokes!
EricHowton: Seriously, it's a metropolitan area, of course there are!
BlackLadyInPhilly: I don't want to move into KKK land or something.
EricHowton: Geez!
