I didn't want yet another credit card (and at 14% it rivals my Dillard's card for highest APR), but after they offered me $50 off the rather substantial total, I jumped at the chance. So with only $38 in tax and free shipping - and with the understanding he's going to utilize the mid-level video card I bought him this time last year, his savings paid for exactly one half of the following:

1TB WD 7200rpm drive "Black"
4.0GHz AMD FX-8320 FX-Series 8-Core "Black Edition"
Corsair Vengeance Pro 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 2133 MHz (PC3 17000)
MSI ATX DDR3 2133 Motherboard 970 GAMING
Antec Earthwatts 650-watt power supply
Sentey® Gs-6006 Z-tron Gaming Computer Case
DVD-ROM optical drive
Thermal paste

I matched him dollar-for-dollar so he could decide exactly where he wanted to put his money (after giving him various bottleneck scenarios) and I'll have him turn every screw and hit every keystroke so he will have built it entirely by his own hands. I still need to find my old static strap...

MOST OF THESE LINKS ARE NOT WORK SAFE!

I've concluded my two backdrop projects. The most recent, was to be a "juxtaposition between Renaissance and Sci-Fi" with the suggestion of a lean toward Voyager. I narrowed that scope to Seven of Nine and John Williams Waterhouse based on requested samples of specific period pieces. And while I was able to take a disturbing fake of Jeri Ryan as a she-male with an erect silver borg 'member' stuffed into a fake of Robert Picardo's ass, and turn it into nude "art" (looking at it, you have no idea of its horrifically graphic source) my favorite has to be: Waterhouse's `Echo and Narcissus` merged with a 7 of 9 wallpaper, altered to reflect Sir Frank Dicksee's `La Belle Dame Sans Merci` in her eye, and fading into the stars in the background )
The finished project can be found here.

Speaking of, I was very excited to have talked [livejournal.com profile] celtmanx into limiting his background to Inara and Book. Now he wants this picture included. I submit to you - where would I put it in this picture? [livejournal.com profile] celtmanx's was much easier to do - being simply a collage of carefully selected images.

About [livejournal.com profile] celtmanx: Back a spell, our very own [livejournal.com profile] galinda822 posted about a mother who shaved her teenage daughter's head to make her unattractive so boy's wouldn't have sex with her. I posted my usual nonsense - I wouldn't do a bald chick. Unless she was hot. Subsequently, [livejournal.com profile] celtmanx replied seemingly daily to that comment (in [livejournal.com profile] galinda822's journal) to me with full-length, full-color "bald" chicks (if you know what I mean). As one can expect, [livejournal.com profile] galinda822 eventually had enough of this, and rallied my wife to her cause, who demanded I take action (she wanted me to fill his journal with schlong).

I got around to payback during the backdrop creation for his site. You see, there we were, both on AIM...

I was looking for pics of Inara (he wanted nudes) and I'll be damned if I didn't find nuded fakes of the entire cast of Firefly. Yes, you heard me right, The entire cast... Hehehe.

As he expected, I started with nudes of Inara - accidentally slipping in fakes of Jayne & Mal with large, turgid man-parts. I wish I could've seen his face! I ended up slipping in an entire sausagefest. Great fun AND...dear [livejournal.com profile] galinda822 was finally vindicated!

The entire Firefly Fanfic collection can be found as a result of a wget here. For the love of your dear and fluffly lord, please click at your own risk!

Pictures! I've been on on the hunt for non-boring things to take pictures of without actually putting any effort into it. I find that just following my boy around is great fun, because he's always doing something. I found him out in the front yard swinging a stick around as a lightsaber. As soon he saw me he struck a menacing pose.

And I feel lucky to have snapped this one of Daisy. Thankfully, the camera, coupled with its high-speed card can take back-to-back pictures. This is something I never would've been able to grab with the camera [livejournal.com profile] drax0r gave me three years ago.

I seriously wanted to make a Sun Microsystems demotivator out of it (or at least my very own lolcat) but I suck and couldn't think of a thing. Maybe you guys'll come up with something.

Remainder:

  • For those in the know, the wallpapers are here. I'll say no more.

  • [livejournal.com profile] galinda822 sent me the novel Stardust. Thanks!

  • I've been getting a lot of requests for job interviews lately; mostly in the D.C. area.

  • They canceled the Pinewood Derby build-day. Without communicating it to anyone.

  • I didn't leave the house today. How cool is that?

  • I made two avatars up for grabs if anyone wants them:

  • Took an unscheduled trip to visit the folks Saturday morning even though they're driving out here on Christmas day, and ended up leaving the children there until Tuesday. Bonus. We had a nice visit. I feel like I'm really getting my money's worth when they show up next week, because we've already caught up; we can now do some real visiting with the pleasantries already behind us.

The house sure is quiet though.

  • One of my favorite quotes in The Three Amigos is the monologue concerning El Guapo, and I required the text for a comment. IMBD however, doesn't re-direct to a list of movies for you to choose which The Three Amigos you want to view details for, no it takes you straight to Carlos Mencia's comedic standup because of the inclusion of the article, "The." I find this unsettling. So I do an actor search - Martin Short, nah - Steve Martin, that should do it. There are thirteen. Art Directors, Production Specialists and the like. I can't find the actor Steve Martin...that's because he's listed as the writer of Shopgirl. Of course he is. Almost no one is familiar with the fact that he also acts.

    Dumbasses.

  • Found A Life Less Ordinary at Fry's for $7.99 and watched it last night. I was sure my wife had seen it. [livejournal.com profile] galinda822 let me borrow it when I first arrived in STL, but I thought we all watched it together at her place once. She enjoyed it, so that rocks. Holly Hunter is fantastic.

Then I finally got around to watching, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry. Good stuff.

  • When I was in Alabama several years back, we were staying in a million-dollar "log cabin" about a quarter mile away from where our friends lived on the same property. Every morning we'd walk up, and every evening we'd walk back. In between we'd spend time walking around the acreage. Our friends ran an animal rescue, and had several pets of their own as well. I'd never seen cats "walk" with you, but there were about six that walked with us and the dogs wherever we went.

Daisy "walked" with us today as we took the pug for a walk. That was awesome.

  • [livejournal.com profile] schpydurx posted some anti-Semitic material for which I called him on. I mean, I know he has a love-fest for Mel Gibson, but Christ! Reminds me of the They Might Be Giants song:

This is where the party ends
I can't stand here listening to you
    And your racist friend.

  • I've been replying, "May the Force be with you." whenever someone wishes me a Merry Christmas, and since we've been out shopping today, that's more than a few opportunities. I thought it was funny and witty.

    My wife hates it.

I think I'll drink Peppermint Martini's to excess this evening.

Daisy's doing much better - she's resting at home after surgery and slowly getting her strength back. Niobe has sufficiently convalesced and becomes restless being segregated from the rest of the feline population after a week or so of quarantine. Thank you all for your comments on my last post.

The children have been with my mother since Tuesday and I had my first Technology Advisory Commission meeting last night. I'm off Friday so I'm taking the wife out to see Harry Potter, then possibly, just for giggles, trying to see if I can procure a copy of the new book Friday night at midnight.

Saturday MADDOG may or may not come over. Regardless, I'll be working on some new web projects and I've been giving serious consideration to moving from Solaris to linux. Either way, I've decided not to keep the Netra t1125 and instead installing Solaris 10 on my RAVE box (possibly upgrading the optical drive to a DVD-ROM and doubling the RAM in it. I'm thinking of building out a RAVE on my desk at work with Solaris 10 as a test run. XFCE which I installed on my U30, completely buries the box - so I'm hoping that not having a window manager (which I don't use on my servers) will allow it to run as quickly as I expect it to. But the 1.6GHz/768MB x86 box I threw ubuntu-server on is in the running. I'm thinking of adding a 250GB SATA drive (as the root drives are mirrored 30GB) which will sway the decision as to which box gets colo'd. I'll still be running Solaris at home.

I've put 500 miles on the Tiburon. Edmunds gave it a lackluster review, citing things which I actually appreciate - the fact that it accelerates & rides smooth, but can't outperform or out-corner the high-revving four-cylinder cars in which it competes against. I'm actually thrilled about this, as I'm not a teenager anymore. It's the most non 'sport' sport-coupe out there apparently.

Talked to [livejournal.com profile] galinda today - my wife was going to call her yesterday, but her mother evaporated her energy after an overly lengthy phone conversation; haven't heard from [livejournal.com profile] photogoot since Saturday (nigh a week now) and will be spending Sunday at my folks, retrieving children and enjoying the weekend day with them.

This week, I've been a lot like SERIOUS CAT.
He's Fucking Serious.

So long farewell, auf weidersehen good-bye...

The U-HAUL Sport Trailer is loaded. It was roomier than I anticipated. Not only did I get everything in which was earmarked to go, I got a lot of other stuff packed as well, including my daughter's bicycle and scooter. LOTS of room in that little trailer. I roll out in the morning.

Oh she move like the Diva do
I said "I'd love to dance like you."
She said "just take off my red shoes
Put them on and your dream'll come true
With no words, with no song
You can dance the dream with your body on
And this curve, is your smile
And this cross, is your heart
And this line, is your path...

I dreamed Friday night that [livejournal.com profile] galinda822, [livejournal.com profile] photogoot, and I were in a large, underground mall/theater. We were running into numerous problems as we tried to circumnavigate the area, as all the hallways not only interconnected at seemingly odd places, but some were very lengthy, twisting hallways with no exits except an auditorium, most of which were filled not with moviegoes, but event attendees. The three of us got separated often, and cell phone coverge inside the facility was shotty. photogoot and I had our cameras (rather, I was carrying his PowerShot G5) and were looking for interesting things to photograph along the way. Unfortunately, by the time we found a good shot, various intermissions from the many rooms always seemed to spoil our shot with an excess of activity. At one point, I sat in the back of a theatre as the members were filing back in for the next leg of their presentation, but got kicked out since I didn't have a event badge. Having enough of this, I was lucky to find a small tiki bar at a quiet corner of the mall. Lots of people were filing back to their location. I asked the bartender for a hefe weizen. He begins, "The hefe-weizen is a dark, malty beer..."
"Yes, I know what a hefe-weizen is, I lived in Germany!" I interuppted. Sheesh! He left to go get my beer, but never returned. I was thankful for the peace and quiet with the crowds gone, but my unease was growing since I hadn't seen my two companions in awhile. Finally, they both show up laughing and jovial. I told photogoot about the bartender trying to describe a hefe-weizen to me, and he showed me pics he'd taken of galinda by some framed works of art which were actually hammered copper. The bartender had left his Canon Rebel XTi behind the bar, and I considered stealing it, beacuse he was such an ass, but another intermission let out and I lost my friends in the bedlam which ensued. Fine. I had to go to the bathroom anyway. It took forever to find one, and when I did, it was a dark, cavernous locker-room type place with thousands of stalls and a moist, wet floor from the huge open-bay shower area. I picked a stall and went to close the door, but suddenly there were hundreds of men in there yelling and sceaming as if a winning game had just finished - and all the doors had dissapeared from the stalls.

Many thanks to the special gift rec'd yesterday from [livejournal.com profile] somebritinmass. It's my favorite, and I will place it tenderly into my care. And Daisy says, "Meow."

I'm drunk on margarita's.

My Final Fantasy Collection

Dreamed about the second half of Battlestar Galactica Season Two. I won't tell you about it because I dreamed spoilers.

Successfully migrated all my iTunes data to my new 160GB drive. It rocks harder. $60!

Just ate leftover fire-burgers from yesterday - they're fantastic!

Carla here. That r0x.

Tony is my hetero-life mate and I miss him. It's like...twins being separated. It hurts.

Every neighborhood kid with in a mile came to swim in the pool today. We were all drunk on margarita's so we didn't care.

I'm Texan. I like George Strait.

I snatched open the humirdor and lit a cigar for [livejournal.com profile] galinda822 and myself. They were fantastic

I have my 'Stephen Segal' in.

Daisy is the most beautiful cat on earth.

I'm going to bed now.

My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery.

Chose Batman Begins to be my HQ-mode testing on the Magnavox. Granted, it runs 2:30 (read three DVD's) but I have yet to see it, and when I do...*shivers*

My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet.

I've read quite a bit on the X-Men: The Last Stand score composed by John Powell, and then picked it up, listened to it, ripped it - tar'd it, scp'd it to work, listened to it there - anyway, I have to give this one to [livejournal.com profile] schpydurx, but I do prefer Powell's score to Mr. & Mrs. Smith. There, I've said it. It's just so fantastic. Sorry for giving you grief Tom, you're right - worth having.

My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark.

I'm taking tomorrow off, so I probably won't be as active as usual. Then again, I may be MORE active. Who knows. As soon as the wife found out about my decision, she started in on where we would go and what we would do...

Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy.

Didn't get a chance to grill tonight, but dinner was fantastic nonetheless. Wife had shredded some chicken I grilled a few nights ago and made the most fabulous quesdilla's yet. Ain't nuthin wrong with dat!

The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament.

Did not enjoy Lost as much as I wanted to. I'm new to Michael Giacchino (being introduced to him in The Incredibles) and nothing has come even close to that sound - save MI:3 where I can pick him out every now and again. In a surprising move, Lord of War was excellent, but I've only heard it once now, and require another listen or two before I suggest it.

My childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets.

Daisy jumped on my desk while I was sitting here and managed to, in about 4 seconds, power on my Solaris box, rename an avi, bring up the Dashboard, and knock all the Batmobiles off my desk! There's a lot of untapped computing power under that fur. If only I could get her to code.

When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really.

At the age of twelve I received my first scribe.

Picked up today:

Chronicles of Narnia Soundtrack
Final Fantasy Advent Children Soundtrack

At the age of fourteen a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles.

Still want on DVD & CD: The Godfather Trilogy. Even I have to admit, my uber-geekdom laserdisc player is getting dated.

There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum... it's breathtaking - I highly suggest you try it.

I miss you more than Michael Bay missed the mark, When he made Pearl Harbor.

I think my cat Daisy has figured out and understands the HVAC system at the house. This may help should I need repairs in the future. I'm wondering if I could bribe her into replacing my hot-water heater with some canned tuna.

I miss you more then that movie missed the point, And that’s an awful lot girl.

I was up late listening to my new soundtrack - it was blessedly quiet in the house (after the kids went down) and the environment was perfect for doing so. Then my wife walks in from the other room where you couldn't hear it and exclaims that the music is a little loud. "Funny, it wasn't until you came in here." I replied.

And now, now you've gone away, And all I'm trying to say,

My neck is aching today. I either slept on it wrong, or my head has swollen to a massive size due to all the thinking I've been engaged in lately. I just took two Excedrin. Where is the user group file on OSX anyway?

Is Perl Harbor sucked and I miss you.

darwin is unix which isn't really unix, based on BSD which is more like SYS5 now which darwin isn't...My head hurts. [livejournal.com profile] drax0r had a book entitled, "OSX for Unix Geeks" or something to that effect. Perhaps that will show me where the shadow file is, since I know one exists...Oh, and groups is an executable. *sigh*

I need you like Ben Affleck needs acting school, He was terrible in that film.

I installed a processor, voltage regulator, and a floppy drive on our new *shudder* Exchange server this morning, then loaded it up with 146GB drives. Wouldn't mind having one of those myself. I seriously need to look into some sort of backup/increased capacity for teh max0r.

I need you like Cuba Gooding needed a bigger part, He's way better than Ben Affleck.

We had a one compresser go out on our Liebert A/C unit. I get a call from Facilities. "Are there any servers you could power off just until we get this compresser replaced?"

Yeah, we have at least a dozen servers running for no reason whatsoever.

And now all I can think about is your smile, And that shitty movie too,

Apparently, they have OSXUserUtils, which adds commandline useradd/userdel/groupadd/groupdel fuctionality; but it appears to be just an emulator to the GUI (which I do not require), includes a 'group' which really isn't used (Uh...) and non-functional with 10.4! Fantastic! What a raging pile of shiite muslim that would be.

Perl Harbor sucked and I miss you.

The grill is the stove I never had. It's just massive. We had a Cinco de Mayo celebration Friday night. I was sauteing on the side-burner and boiling stock for the chicken chipotle soup on the left two burners and grilling THREE quesadilla's on the right. It was fantastical. The weather was perfect (if not a little warm), salsa music was playing on the deck and Carla was mixing up margaritas! The chips were crispy and the salsa cold. The neighborhood kids stopped by in droves and each left with a slice of quesadilla. The chicken chipotle soup was way to spicy for the ladies, so I've been eating on it the last three meals, and it leaves my belly hot for several hours after each meal - fantastic! Anyway, tons of fun.

So we watched Lord of War. Tom saw a trailer which made the movie look like a comedy. It was anything but. Anyway, great soundtrack, lots of good, hard-hitting songs from the 60's, 70's, and 80's. Now this part - is funny. Normally, when I'm looking for a score, I usually only find the soundtrack. This time, I was actually looking for the soundtrack, but got the score! So, bonus. Sorry [livejournal.com profile] galinda822!

These cats are worse than children! They are into EVERYTHING! Both of them have just started this habit where they will climb me. If I am standing still, they will leap at me, then make their way up my person, usually laying down once they've reached my shoulders. And today, while wearing a $75 Polo, Niobe tried to eat a hole through my shirt! Grrrrr. (heh - incidentally, the same shirt in my grill avatar; that's it - these wildcats are after the beef smell infused in the threads!) Then Daisy disappeared. That pissed me off. She doesn't do it often. Showed up again just before midnight. I love my Daisy.

Dreamed I had an Italian dinner with [livejournal.com profile] celtmanx and his folks; he ordered the same thing he always orders, the Cannilloni. Also dreamed the wife and I went back to Germany together on vacation. I wanted to bypass traffic, so I was driving a tiny yellow dune buggy on the sidewalks. Until it ran out of power. Then we marched up this enormous parking garage to get to the car rental place, but I kept thinking, "Why not just take the train?" They had a kiosk in the German car rental place in which you could rent mac mini's at 65 Deutsch Marks a day. I thought that was a pretty good price.

All I have to do today is mow the lawn.

That picture reminds me. Our Missori neighbors were open the first time I unfolded that chair with the Texas flag on it. I asked them, "Now that I live in St. Louis, might as well get a chair with the Missouri flag on it. Think they make one?" The answer was, "No." It was sitting next to my cooler with the Texas flag on it. "What about one of these?" Again, "No." Now, I've lived a lot of places. Why are us Texans so damn proud of our flag?

Also, discovered 13x2000 First Edition Hot Wheels, 16x1999 First Editions, and 3x1998. Also 4 more Daytona's. Previous entry updated with this new information.

Skoal, caught mid-air doing a whirling dual-wield attack!

Gamed two hours last night, from 2100-2300. Paused the game before I went to bed, but the box rebooted in the middle of the night for updates. Don't think I saved so...will replay again tonight. No worries, I'm not exactly in a hurry to finish the game. What's the point in that?

My boy and I have been reading a page from "The Great Castle Search" each evening. He loves the Great Search series of books. I learned about Motte & Bailey castles and palisades.

The kitties are already housebroken (thanks astro!) and have been ceaselessly exploring. Daisy still hides from them, but they pay her no notice. They don't cry at night, but during the day, when they're out, they use a series of echolocation to find each other if they are out of visual range. Now THAT can get annoying, but it seems to work for them. They will get darker as they mature, developing tiger-stripes or leopard spots, and their wild animal-like pelt will thicken; I got to pet the mothers and they were awesome. I was only able to get these pics because they had just awoken from a mid-afternoon catnap and were still a little groggy:

Headache is gone and I feel fantastic. Its been a busy morning, it always is - but when you're in a great mood, you really don't seem to mind; it's an opportunity to shine!

Still firming up plans for this weekend. I think we're going to watch The Sopranos Friday evening, and the wife is going to finish painting the dining room (and possibly start the living room) Saturday. If she does that, I'll entertain the children downstairs with movies and Hot Wheels.

(12:25:31 PM) EricHowton: Have you heard the good news?
(12:25:35 PM) EricHowton: HE HAS RISEN.
(12:25:50 PM) galinda822: Who?
(12:26:01 PM) EricHowton: Tony's awake!

The sky is gray and its raining buckets. I love it! Of course that always means the children will be underfoot when I get home instead of riding their bikes...

Then there is [livejournal.com profile] drax0r who is an outspoken proponent of not deleting posts...his own posts, that is, as it turns out, as he has recently deleted one of mine. The great operatic composer Wagner thought that no opera should ever be more than two hours long, else one would lose interest. He himself, however, composed operas over four (4) hours long. He felt the rules should apply to everyone but himself. Much like our friend draxor here:

Thanks for playing!

My wife's uncle was diagnosed with stage four lymphatic cancer, and we went to Wichita to comfort her mother and to see her uncle. He was in great spirits, and I enjoyed each visit we had with him. We will possibly be going to Wichita once a month throughout the treatment, which is on 21-day cycles until further notice.

lookin' for a little affection

Astro is on his way to St. Louis with five Begnal kittens, two of which we get to pick. We've decided that Daisy bringing us two bunnies was her way of telling us that she wants some friends.

I took a shot as a contestant on the Love Connection

Bought my third set of Dale-II's whilst in Wichita. Gotta love the Dale-II's! Unfortunately, [livejournal.com profile] danzigfried wasn't wearing his during our lunch at Chipotle.

The audience voted and you know they picked a winner

Our plans were to come back Saturday or Sunday, but he was not allowed visitors after Friday, so we packed up the car, and drove back last night, arriving about midnight - a seven hour trip. Guzzled an energy drink and hit the road. stuf123, this one's for you dude:

I took my date to the Hilton for Medina and some dinner

Mother-in-law's mobo appears fried. I think I have one of Tony's old Socket 478 motherboards, but will require a CPU and some memory, as I'm sure I don't have any spare DDR laying around. I went to CompUSA today to price processors and a new video card for my XP box. I had to crack mine open to see what I had, as its been so long since I built it:

Existing Card:

GeForce 5300
128MB DDR2
250MHz Engine
350MHz RAMDAC

Possible New Card:

GeForce 6600
256MB DDR3
500MHz Engine
400MHz Dual-RAMDAC

She had a few drinks, I'm thinkin' soon what I'll be gettin'

It looks like xirr rebooted at 1521.

Instead she started talkin' about plans for a weddin'

My boy and I are going to go out back and pretend to be Zeo Power Rangers. I'll be Jason, the Gold Ranger, my son will be Tommy, the Red Ranger. I can't wait. *eyeroll*

Said wait, slow down, love, not so fast, says "I'll be seein' ya"

Didn't sleep well at all last night, but I did get about an hour of DS2 in, which is always nice. Unpacked this morning, went grocery shopping, and plan on getting the kids down about 2000 tonight. I sure hope I rest well this evening. Tomorrow, mow the lawn, get things ready for work Monday, and do as little as possible in-between!

That's why I found you don't play around

I may try to pretend that Gold Ranger is chasing bad guys with the lawn mower and kill two birds with one stone!

With the Funky Cold Medina!

Gamed until 2300. Daisy slept on my head.

It's worse than you know.

Created a new schedule with the wife Saturday, to make things easier, and to save money.

Tuesday's I do the household shopping, sans groceries.
Kids go down every evening without fail at 2000.
I grill dinner every weekday evening.
We walk everyday after work.
I refrain from any internet activity and/or gaming until after 2030.
Wife and I do the bills together every Thursday after 2030.

Friday night is movie night, the only evening we turn on the television.
We order out Friday night.
I only buy beer on Friday.

It usually is.

Was supposed to take reciept of the bengal kitties tomorrow - but am instead making a whirlwind trip to Wichita Tuesday after work. I hope to be back in town sometime this weekend, giving me at least one day off before I have to return to work. So much to do, so much on my mind...Being personally responsible for everything which surrounds me wears me out. I have so little time for reflection or regret.

We have a little problem with our entry sequence, so we may experience some slight...turbulence and then explode.

Burned all my movies off teh max0r this weekend, freeing up something in the neighborhood of 52GB. I wondered why my 72GB drive was near capacity. Of course I know why the little internal drive in the mac is full - I'm sitting at 30GB of iTunes music. I'm contemplating burning off my entire collection for backup purposes. Something like six DVD's worth. I think it's time for me to invest in a little mirrored 1TB vault. It doesn't have to be fast, just stable...

And that being said, I'm continually impressed with my XP box. I burned off a whole host of junk from that 10k drive, deleted the swapfile, and it defragged in 8 seconds. Nice. Was hoping running only on RAM my game would load/run faster, but it doesn't. Still contemplating a new video card. Oh where will I find the time, or the money?

I aim to misbehave.

Tivo'd four movies last night, burned one, have 10 more to burn, downloaded, created, printed, cut and inserted five DVD covers for a total of 20, and I have 10 more to create. Thirty days until I turn off all my movie channels.

Never got that Nokia cable to work. Asses.

I think my Phillips multimedia player is going out.

The Magnavox is doing a superb job and I'm happy with the quality of the recordings if they're set to SP (2-hour) but I have several movies which were recorded at 2.5-hours & 3-hours. The darker scenes are the ones which disapointed me. Oh, and my recorder is black...

SomeBritInMass and his wife were pondering Daisy's ability to capture and bring TWO bunnies up the deck without claws, and they settled on what I consider the most plausible theory yet: A Romulan cloaking device!

Poem for galinda )

Further news on the new BSG series here.

Anatomy of the poem: The first stanza expresses how external forces can influence us, in this case, negatively. The second stanza touches on how we, as individuals crave more than being pawns to said influences, demand it even! The third stanza shows our resignation to these influences, followed in the fourth stanza by the usually shallow and egotistical belief that one can overcome one's circumstances; knowing full well they always have and always will fail. The last stanza deals entirely with the ultimate outcome of those external forces, each in their own way.

Also, I've decided that needing to urinate everytime you mention it's time for a scooby-snack is not a psychosomatic response, rather, it's the 1-litre of water I intake hourly between our breaks.

The kids were in the other room watching television the other night when they came into the living room to get me. They were very excited about something. The both of them. They each grabbed a hand and tried to extract me from the couch. I relented and followed them into the other room. They sat on the edge of the bed, and patted a space between them. "Sit here, HURRY!" I sat down in front of an infomercial for a mop, and looked at both of them. What did you want me to see? Did I miss it? Both pair of eyes were GLUED to the screen. "No, daddy, this is it - watch!" I watch a man demonstrate the mop on a variety of substances. The children were awe-struck. About two and a half minutes later, they show the mop, and the price. $19.95. "This is the part!" My son announces. My daughter squeals with delight. Not one, but TWO! TWO mops for the price of one! the television announces. Both children looked as though they had seen the real Santa Claus. "TWO DADDY! You can get TWO mops!" They were very excited about the mops. I was speechless.

Going to Wichita this weekend to perform the smaller of the two moves. Leaving Thursday after work and arriving back in STL Saturday evening. As the in-laws are still out of town, we're contemplating theiving their 27" television until we get our household goods from Texas. I cannot wait to get a couch!

Astro. His wife. His brother-in-law. My wife. Our friend. Our two children. Myself. Enjoyed dinner and an evening with Astro & his family when he came to STL on business. Will unfortunately miss them on the way back, as we are in Wichita that weekend. Not to worry, they're looking to get down here lickety-split! His brother-in-law is an ex-Navy man and unix system administrator. That was cool, we had lots to talk about! That and Astro finally come up with the goods - pics of the Bengals. Oh, they're gorgeous. The coloring! The patterns! Meow.

Concerning the Texas move:

060322 (evening) Leave for Wichita. Sleep upon arrival.
060323 (morning) Leave for Boyd. Kids at folks. Overnight at David & Wendy's.
060324 (all-day event) Mom & Dad. Kids at folks. Overnight at David & Wendy's.
060325 (morning) Pick up U-Haul in Decatur & load. Overnight in Decatur.
060326 (late-morning) Drive to Wichita. Overnight in Wichita.
060327 (morning) Drive to STL.
060328 Unload truck. Pass out upon completion.
060329 Return truck
060330 Return to work.

Methinks David & Wendy are going to keep Mleko. She's a sweet cat, and I love her. But she is also getting up in years, and there is nothing I can offer her that David cannot. Plus, she's integrated herself into his 4000/sqft home with his other cats and hasn't seen Daisy in a year. I'd hate to move her across the country to offer her an 800/sqft house with Daisy. If there's going to be someone other than myself who is caring for Mleko, there's no one else I would rather it be than David.

For Valentine's, my wife presented me with a basket arrangement of Bud Light and chocolate World Poker Tour 'chips' (we are in STL, after all - what better way to express ourselves than with Bud Light, the local beer of choice?) I hid in the house, a bottle of Godiva White Chocolate Liqueur. I wonder if she'll share?

Finished my bottle of Oak Creek Merlot ($2.99) yesterday - loved it. I think Merlot is my new favorite, and perhaps I'll find a little better wine than Oak Creek as well for my next one. This was followed by a bottle of Spatlese ($11) which was not chilled, but it was bottled in the Rhinehessen area (my fav) and it was TO DIE FOR. Damn I love Spatlese. Andy drinks Yellow Tail Shiraz-Cabernet ($6.99) a 60/40 mix. Not being familar with Shiraz, I bought a bottle of RedBud ($4.99) to try it. It was horrid. I spat it from my mouth. The Shiraz-Cabernet was quite nice though, but the wife ended up drinking all of that, leaving me with the Oak Creek Chardonnay. *Nasty*

Ok, so it's true SomeBritInMass sends me a cuban cigar, and imported catnip for Daisy. However, to date, only one person has dared to send me an entire box of chips and salsa. Inside the box, was a beautiful Texas A&M embossed card which read, "Eric, I thought you might like a little taste of Texas." Dude, one word, AWESOME. Thanks so much It touches me in ways my Kansan wife never could. Thanks David.

Played an awesome game of 'I Spy' branded Go Fish with the wife and our son last night. It was so much fun, but that might have just been the Spatlese. Today at work was very busy, and Carla left early to clean the house for Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow - we're looking forward to the festivities there...and to view our local celebrity status on Tivo.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

I love gin.

I love my wife and miss her something terrible.

I watched the movie "Soldier's Girl" this evening.

My children are annoying and distress me when I'm near them. Nonetheless I miss them when they are gone.

I am listening to the Telarc release, "Choral Masterpieces" with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Probably under the direction of Robert Shaw.

I can't sleep. I am very sleepy. I am wide awake. I will pay for this in the morning. If I could get away with NOT sleeping tonight, I would.

I need to be in early in the morning.

I have already picked the tie I am going to wear tomorrow.

I cannot believe Richard Penn wanted me for this job.

I'm enjoying my job, but I'm not entirely comfortable in it yet. I'm sure that will come in time.

I have compensated for not being a unix admin by re-doubling my efforts on quark.

I need more disk space on my server.

I want another server up.

I wish Jay would put quark with his servers. It's only 2U!

I wish Tony would bring up osCommerce so I could at least provide Dan Smith with what he wants.

I miss Tony.

I miss my cats. Mleko is integrating into David's household. Speedbump thinks he owns their house.

I will eat steel cut oats for breakfast.

I have not been on my high blood pressure medication for nearly a month.

Houses here are fucking expensive!

These Logitech X-230's are not a poor replacement for my fried Bose.

Bose are overrated anyway.

I always preferred Infinity.

I don't know that Infinity makes multi-media speakers.

I don't know why they wouldn't.

I annoy most people who know me.

The only reason my co-workers tolerate me is because I'm the new manager.

I listen to "The Shape of Things to Come" at least 4 times a day.

I wish my Cavalier had more horsepower.

I'm thankful for my family. Everything I do is for them, even when they don't realize it.

I've thought about becoming Amish. I could really do that.

It was fun living with David and Wendy.

We had a house picked out in Burleson.

I drink a lot of water (when I'm not drinking gin).

I need to urinate.

I have a Sun 711 multi-pack.

I don't know where it is.

I miss Daisy.

I like OSX.

I am no longer functional with XP because I try to use OSX commands.

It makes me look retarded.

Saturday:

Arrived in St. Louis. Found my hotel and moved in. It is, probably the worst hotel I've ever stayed at, in what I assume is the worst part of town. Still, they have a kitchenette, and broadband. Well, that's what I was told anyway. It's wireless access. I have no wireless devices. *sigh.* So, I buy a $100 USB network adapter. Yeah, that's what they run, $100. And I have to use windows to get it to work. Only thing is, it doesn't. Well, the device works fine and connects me to the network. Only I don't get assigned an IP address or default gateway. Who thought wireless was a good idea? There is a silver lining in this dark cloud, and that is, for $75 I can bring Daisy here to stay with me the entire 6 months. Now that makes me happy. Of course in certain parts of St. Louis, my Cingular phone joins the Verizon network and tries to prompt me for credit card information. Anyway, back to the internet. Extended Stay America has a 1-800 number they use for IT support. "Guest Tech." I called Canada and utilizing the Netgear Smart Wizard, connected to individual access points with a static IP, DNS and a gateway. All to no avail, as still, I could not even ping the gateway. We were troubleshooting for about half an hour before he realized he couldn't help me. That's usually the way things go with me. Why oh why couldn't they just wire RJ-45 in these rooms? I'm sure when he calls me back, he'll have a solution. After all, I'm using XP, right? Something he did tell me, however, is that I can request a public IP which bypasses their firewall. Now, IF we can get up on their cheesy WAP, that might just be the most exciting thing to happen to me so far during this new adventure...

Two things I forgot to bring with me to STL. Both are devastating and left a burning in the pit of my stomach when I realized it. My humidor, and my ties. $100 later and I'm the proud owner of three new ties. But WTF am I supposed to find a humidor full of cubans here? I'll have to retrieve it when I got to pick up Daisy.

Sunday:

Guest Tech is going to send someone out tomorrow. Two of the longest days of my life without access in a hotel all alone. I think I'll watch a movie. Oh, and the weekend-night girl is back at the front desk! Today I was 'babe.' Yesterday I was 'sweetie' and 'pumpkin.'

Imported all my opera from my now defunct Shoutcast server to iTunes for something to do and listen to. Full opera's of La Boheme, La Traviata, Tosca, and highlight of Wagner's Ring Cycle. Good stuff. Makes me want to go out and buy more. And of course the Doctor was singing La Boheme on the episode of Voyager I watched last night too...

Monday:

Shadowed my boss all day. He's probably tired of looking at me. Didn't really do anything today. Just watched and listened and sat a lot.
Came into the hotel and asked about the internet access. My very next question was going to be, "What time is checkout tomorrow?" However, much to my surprise, they fixed it. I need a stiff drink. banwidthplace.com clocks me at 83.8 kilobits per second. Watchout for Speedy! Maybe I'll just swallow my own tongue.

Accomplished though he was, I bet Mario Andretti never navigated US75 Central Expressway at full speed. I don't even know why they built Texas Motor Speedway since 75 accomplishes the very same thing. I pulled off the entrance ramp, having to adjust my speed to slip between two cars just after rush hour, accelerating to match. The car to my left was matching my speed, and since the car behind me had fallen back, I hit the brakes hard but quick, indicated once, and jerked the wheel to the left while flooring it to immediately draft behind the person previously to my left. A quick mirror check and I flew past him on the left with a single hit of the blinker, accelerating to prevent the person coming up behind me in the new lane from braking. One more hit of the blinker and I was back in the left right lane keeping the rev's up best I could as I coasted betwix two vehicles, one which was indicating to swing in behind me. With that nearly accomplished, I rechecked the mirror and hit the indicator, moving over one, accelerating, moving over again, this time into the far left lane, and took my place among the 80+ group! Had I 10" vented disc brakes, a 4-speed tranny and about 725 horsepower in that Cav, I could have accomplished this much easier. As it was, I'm pretty impressed I was able to pull off the delicate balance of manuvering, maintaining RPM, and braking in an '02 stock LS model. Now I'll tell you what could manuver, that gorgeous Sebring LXi. It sat so low, and with those 17" stock wheels, she could take the G's of the quick lane change...and she at least had a V6. Alas, she is no more:

Gave Daisy lots of lovin' last night but felt like I laid awake in bed six hours instead of sleeping.

Today is the day teh max0r gets OC'd! 1500MHz baby!

It’s quarter to three,
There’s no one in the place ’cept you and me
So set ’em’ up joe
I got a little story I think you oughtta know

We’re drinking my friend
To the end of a brief episode
So make it one for my baby
And one more for the road

I know the routine
Put another nickel in that there machine
I’m feeling so bad
Won’t you make the music easy and sad

I could tell you a lot
But you gotta to be true to your code
So make it one for my baby
And one more for the road

You’d never know it
But buddy I’m a kind of poet
And I’ve got a lot of things I wanna say
And if I’m gloomy, please listen to me
Till it’s all, all talked away

Well, that’s how it goes
And joe I know you’re gettin’ anxious to close
So thanks for the cheer
I hope you didn’t mind
My bending your ear

But this torch that I found
It’s gotta be drowned
Or it soon might explode
So make it one for my baby
And one more for the road

It's 0245. I can't sleep and I don't know why. The above song popped into my head when I saw the time. Tony keeps glaring at me because I'm typing 'too hard' on his little Apple Branded iBook G4. I want to sleep. I want to drift off into blissfull unconciousness. But I cannot, and I don't know why. Played poker at Tony's house most of the evening with he and Andy. Texas Hold'em. Tony's facinated with the game. I think I'd prefer straight 7-card for that matter, but it was entertaining nonetheless. I have a friend who went to Las Vegas to compete in the World Series of Poker. She finished in the top 5%. Not too shabby. She was playing Texas Hold'em. Changed Daisy's litter, refilled her food, and cleaned out her water. She gave me lots of love for that. Then I put her monthly flea formula on her and she skulked back under the bed. If I don't fall asleep soon, I'm going to pull an all-nighter and just go extra early this morning. At least the traffic from Richardson to South Fort Worth won't be bad. I have a can of Starbuck's expresso in the fridge. I was going to use it to bring myself back to life when I awoke, but perhaps I'll use it instead to revitalize myself during my zero-dark-hundred dash back across the Metroplex. Daisy just jumped up to give me some more kitty-loving. Good thing Tony keeps his iBook nearby. I'm going to try again for a little more shut-eye.

And one more for the road...

(08:17:08) SomeBritInMass: How's life today.
(08:19:24) EricHowton: Little rough around the edges actually, though it was nice to see Daisy!
(08:21:09) SomeBritInMass: Daisy lives with Tony. Tony likes to drink. Tony drinks a huge amount, especially when you're around. You were at Tonys last night!
(08:26:58) EricHowton: Exactly!
(08:27:23) SomeBritInMass: Sherlock watch out!

I saw a couple of Dallas County Constables on my drive in to work this morning. I think it's coincidence.

Let me tell you, a double-fault final-play elimination hasn't occurred since the Helsinki episode of 1919, and I think we all remember how THAT turned out!

I have finally made the move to replace my longtime Google default homepage to drax0r.org. I tell you, it has everything you need! Even a link to CTRL-ALT-DELETE online!

A coincidence occurs when unexpected parallels can be drawn from two or more events. In the popular sense it is used to describe events (or, more accurately, combinations of two or more events) which are of low probability.

xanga's e-props are gay.

Nobody makes me bleed my own blood. NOBODY.

I'm back on the set, covering all bets.

So we went through this NT domain migration. Everyone's on a new domain now. They kept the WINS servers up for the sole purpose of authenticating users properly when they write to their samba shares. Well, since migration everyone who writes to their shares shows up as 'nobody' and the reverberation has been felt far and wide. The Resource Technical Branch Team Leader stopped by my desk so I could fix this. "Talk to your Windows people." I told him. (I usually tell him this by default, but in this case, it was actually applicable.)
"But it only happens when they try to write to their Sun workstations, so it's your problem." he tells me.
"It worked prior to migration, it doesn't work now. Not my problem."
"Perhaps you forgot to change some samba settings on some boxes?"
"I didn't change any samba settings on any boxes. My boxes simply tell all incoming connections, "Authenticate via WINS."
"So...you're going to fix it?"
"No."

Tobacco is an effective and immediate laxative...but sometimes you just fart.

Yesterday was my hardest day to date. I felt homesick. Something I haven't felt since my first permanent duty station in Germany, and I realized I was further away from home than I ever had been. It was a stressful day at work, Daisy bit the baby at the house in which she was staying (not unprovoked, I might add) and I was deeply touched when Tony offered to keep her (she's his favorite anyway). However, this necessitated a drive from Benbrook to Richardson, just over an hour via I-20 to I-45 to 75. I bought him a bottle of Maker's Mark to thank him, and ended up staying the night drinking half of it! I do feel better today, my worries swept away.

One of my favorite quotes, by Calvin Coolidge:

Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence.
Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent.
Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb.
Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts.
Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.

I live my life by this, though I admit I probably wouldn't if I were more talented, smarter, or better educated. Funny how that works.

Link to Kitty Relocation

I will never use Chase again. And I beg them to ask me why. I want to tell them, "Because you charged me $20 to fax my payoff information to the title company when I sold my house."

I'm done.
