Watching Power Rangers with my son is a pastime we rarely enjoy anymore, as he's grown out of it for the most part. While we used to play with the figures endlessly, now he only has time for his friends, who dismiss the Power Rangers. I'm not disappointed - as playing Power Rangers was often an arduous task; it was difficult coming up with enough parallel storylines to maintain action and unlike in the television shows, my son always wanted some super-evil villain to destroy all the Power Rangers which irked me on many different levels.

Having been too old for the Super Sentai Series myself, when my son showed interest I turned to the original Power Ranger himself, [livejournal.com profile] drax0r, who filled me in on all the important details. Moving forward, I found that the entire original series was available for download, so grabbed all of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers for my son to watch in between the then airing Power Rangers S.P.D. or "Space Patrol Delta." Power Ranger Wild Force was picked up through children's books and discount action figures, though he did have at one time the entire set of S.P.D.

Learning that this was an ever-changing and elusive beast in which to follow, and discovering my son's innate...well, if not understanding, than at least expectation of what his father was capable of, having grown bored between seasons, he desired something new. No problem. I downloaded Japanese Magiranger episodes for him. In Japanese. He and his sister would watch them, back-to-back, with fascination, not understanding a word they said. In fact, when the U.S. version came out the next year, Mystic Force he didn't care as much for it despite the fact that he could understand it.

That was the joy which was Disney's Jetix channel, and one of the two reasons I always got the one-up-from-basic upgrade package: They would show an hour of 'Generations' twice a day. Four episodes from the entire franchise. This was also our saving grace when we'd spend weekends at [livejournal.com profile] galinda822's the kids had their own television and own cable!

One of the most humorous things I found about the show was the way they portrayed being in pain, especially after a visually benign explosion which always occurs behind them, landing them all prone on the ground. When they arise, no matter which iteration of the series you're watching, they always grab their chest. Due no doubt in part to the fact that their uniforms include an identity-concealing opaque visor on their helmets. How else to you emote pain? The chest-grab remains one of my favorite repeatable cheesy-moments in Power Ranger episodes.

I hope I never forget the excitement my son has shown in wanting to be a Power Ranger when he grows up. One Christmas my wife bought him an inflatable Power Ranger-themed punching bag complete with costume and instructional training DVD. He and his friend followed the training the other day for the first time in at least a year. It was great fun for me just knowing that, but I've always been curious to watch him learn and express on his own as he figures out the world around him. I got that opportunity this weekend.

During the mighty office reconfiguration I came across some old DVD's I'd burned for my son. One of them was "Forever Red" where they brought together all the past Red Rangers and pitted them against a resurgence of the Machine Empire on the moon. This lead him to pull out his old S.P.D. DVD's and I sat in the Children's Retreat and watched them with him, just like old times.

After a particularly ineffective explosion occurring somewhere behind the Power Rangers, they picked themselves up off the ground, all of them grasping their chest, explaining aloud how powerful this particular nemesis was. My son looks at me and asked, "Why are they holding their chest? That's dumb."

I was laughing too hard to answer.

You go, boy.

My wife's uncle was diagnosed with stage four lymphatic cancer, and we went to Wichita to comfort her mother and to see her uncle. He was in great spirits, and I enjoyed each visit we had with him. We will possibly be going to Wichita once a month throughout the treatment, which is on 21-day cycles until further notice.

lookin' for a little affection

Astro is on his way to St. Louis with five Begnal kittens, two of which we get to pick. We've decided that Daisy bringing us two bunnies was her way of telling us that she wants some friends.

I took a shot as a contestant on the Love Connection

Bought my third set of Dale-II's whilst in Wichita. Gotta love the Dale-II's! Unfortunately, [livejournal.com profile] danzigfried wasn't wearing his during our lunch at Chipotle.

The audience voted and you know they picked a winner

Our plans were to come back Saturday or Sunday, but he was not allowed visitors after Friday, so we packed up the car, and drove back last night, arriving about midnight - a seven hour trip. Guzzled an energy drink and hit the road. stuf123, this one's for you dude:

I took my date to the Hilton for Medina and some dinner

Mother-in-law's mobo appears fried. I think I have one of Tony's old Socket 478 motherboards, but will require a CPU and some memory, as I'm sure I don't have any spare DDR laying around. I went to CompUSA today to price processors and a new video card for my XP box. I had to crack mine open to see what I had, as its been so long since I built it:

Existing Card:

GeForce 5300
128MB DDR2
250MHz Engine
350MHz RAMDAC

Possible New Card:

GeForce 6600
256MB DDR3
500MHz Engine
400MHz Dual-RAMDAC

My boy and I are going to go out back and pretend to be Zeo Power Rangers. I'll be Jason, the Gold Ranger, my son will be Tommy, the Red Ranger. I can't wait. *eyeroll*

Said wait, slow down, love, not so fast, says "I'll be seein' ya"

Didn't sleep well at all last night, but I did get about an hour of DS2 in, which is always nice. Unpacked this morning, went grocery shopping, and plan on getting the kids down about 2000 tonight. I sure hope I rest well this evening. Tomorrow, mow the lawn, get things ready for work Monday, and do as little as possible in-between!

That's why I found you don't play around

I may try to pretend that Gold Ranger is chasing bad guys with the lawn mower and kill two birds with one stone!

Installed a surround sound system in my house...for $57. That was the price of the Logitech X-530 5.1 system at Sam's. Everywhere else they're $75. It came with it's own stereo mini-male to RCA converter, so I took back the $10 worth of parts I picked up at Radio Shack in anticipation of this project. The wife was moaning the entire time, "Why do we have to do this?" And, "I like how it sounds just coming out of the TV." Then I put on The Soprano's and her face lit up and she began nodding at the theme songs pounding out the subwoofer. She likes the new system. Saved some bucks too, doing it this way.

In updating my iTunes database to include the newest Power Rangers: Mystic Force, I ran across the submission by the original composer, Aaron Waters. I played it for my six-year-old, who much prefers it over the rap-song (yo!) the producers chose. Funny, I wonder if they asked any six-year-old's before making their decision. I doubt it.

Replaced my grill. Same make and model as the one I left in Texas. Assembled my second grill in as many years. Tiring. I hate buying things twice. I'll send Dad a Father's Day card letting him know he can keep my old one. He's going to LOVE that.

Unpacked the Krups, cleaned it, and immediately made a demi-tasse of expresso. It's been oh, so long. It was fantastic!

Completed Season One of The Sopranos. Not bad. I've never seen Scarface. I loved Godfather III. Been listening to the soundtrack a lot. The Sinatra and the Main Title mostly. Good stuff.

Currently downloading DVD cover art for my blank cases, as the wife found a Magnavox console DVD recorder for under $100 and I have just under two dozen movies on Tivo awaiting a home. Got a 50-pack of the slim cases at Sam's for something like, 12 bucks, so am having to photoshop the spine to get the title to fit. So far so good. Tony's had issues with his Magnavox, so I'm going to burn off these movies pretty quick hoping if it goes tango-uniform it does so during the first 30-days of use. Other than that, this will make a nice little addition to my collection.

Was sitting here listening to the V for Vendetta score. Pretty good stuff. I've decided I'll wait for it to come out on PPV, Tivo it, then burn it to DVD. Better than the theater!

My boy discovered one of his friends at school lives next door. They played outside yesterday. Each of the boys brought out some trucks. My daughter brought out some dolls. They didn't want to play with her and her dolls. She came back in and asked, "Will you find me some girl friends daddy?" So we walked around the block last night looking for girl friends for my daughter. We were unsuccessful :(

The American release of the Japanese MagiRanger premiered last week. I Tivo'd it for my son and finally got a chance to watch most of it last night. Mystic Force Power Rangers. It's amazing how they can change the entire story, and still use the Japanese fight scenes. Its also amazing how bad this is comparatively.

Looking into a console DVD recorder now that I have a Tivo. Found an off-brand on target.com for $119 that also has a USB port on it. Sweet!

Set up my CentOS/RaQ 550 box. The update URL is a non-working address, but a co-worker of mine managed to fine a mirror of sorts which works with the software update just fine. There is of course a lot more to this than meets the eye, so I'll be playing with my test box in scripting updates automatically and locking down the system before I deploy it at home (on my new anemic 384kbps connection).

In other news, they've just released a new mac mini with an optional dual-core Intel chip and other fantastic updates that makes mine suddenly feel like an old first-gen Macintosh :=)

My son has been getting interested in Transformers. Not that we've put away the Power Rangers just yet...So, being the benevolent father that I am, and always wanting to be up on what my son is interested in, I downloaded Season One of Transformers. I don't want to say that he was ungrateful, but he watched several episodes in confused silence. "What is this, daddy?" He finally asks.
"Transformers, son, I thought you liked them."
"This is like Transformers for babies." He tells me.
Come to find out, I had downloaded the cartoons of Tony's era - what is now referred to as, "Generation One." The last three iterations thus far are Armada, Energon, and now Cybertron. So much to keep up with. The most interesting thing, apparently, as I have no first-hand knowledge of this, is that all the same characters from "Generation One" reprise their roles during each new segment, despite being killed off in the previous segments. Ergo, whilst watching "Generation One," my son was familiar with each of the characters, but they appeared so different (and far tamer would be my guess) than the newest Cybertron series. So I found him Season One. I'll no doubt watch the first few episodes with him so I can keep up. The reason for my post today, is that harddrive filled up, and I'm offloading his episodes to seven CDROM's, as my mac is currently both geographically separated, and I don't get my DSL until Tuesday.

In other news, got a surprise call from an old Air Force buddy of mine I hadn't seen in 5 or so years...he moved to Texas six months ago! Exactly the time I've been in St. Louis! It was great to hear from him and he's a bigwig salesman now in the Aerospace industry and one of the city's in his area of responsibility is...St. Louis! I can't wait to catch up. According to his story, he just got connected, thought, "I'll see if I can find Eric..." He found unixwolf.net in approximately three minutes, and my cell phone on my resume therein shortly afterwords. Five minutes after his initial search, we were catching up. Awesome!

Lori and Carla are painting my daughter's room today. I have the kids. It is my job to keep the children occupied and away from my wife during this period. She finished my son's room last night and it looks GREAT! He's wanted a Nautical-themed room complete with submarine bed and the base coat is now complete. My daughter's room will be a pink-princess room. No real surprise there. Watched The Wedding Crashers and Old School last night. The former wasn't nearly as good as I had been led to expect. That being said, there were several times during the film that I was laughing so hard I couldn't breathe and my sides were aching with laughter. I did the same thing during the latter film, despite having seen it before.

While sitting in the back seat of the car admiring herself in her mirrorma, my daughter exclaims that the rain pelting the car came from the clouds. At three years old, I was awfully impressed, and told her so. Something she learned from Strawberry Shortcake she told me. I don't feel so bad her watching those now that I know she's learning from them.

Have a fantastic weekend!

My son asked me several weeks ago, "Is there such thing as an Orange Power Ranger?" Based on the long running series, there is not, and I let him know as much. He then mentioned the possibility, based on an Japanese anime clip I downloaded for him last year showing an obese Yellow Ranger flanked by a Purple Ranger. I had to give him that. So I begin my research. Apparently, S.P.D. was the first series to feature an Orange Ranger, but it was only a fabrication of Boom, the "Official Gadget Tester" at S.P.D. Headquarters, who was a ranger washout at the Academy. His parents were coming to visit, and he'd never told them he'd flunked out of ranger school. So the team helped propagate the myth that he was the Orange Ranger while his parents were in town. Google had no images of this abomination, but I was able to find the episode on torrent. Unfortunately, the on-again-off-again single seed maintained no greater than 1K download speeds for several weeks. It finished sometime overnight. This impeccable timing, as my wife and daughter are planning a Girls Night out, overnight with a coworker, leaving my son excited for a "Boys Night" with Daddy this weekend. He's had his list planned for a week now: Watch Power Rangers, play Power Rangers, eat Taco Bell, and watch "Good Ole Boys" (what he calls The Dukes of Hazzard.) He's very excited about the Orange Ranger episode (Episode 16).

For several years, I drove a 1976 Am General Jeep DJ-5. That's right, the right-hand drive mail jeep version. Because it was an AM General, I thought if I painted it McDonnell-Douglas olive drab, it too, could look like military Hummer. So I did. It didn't look like a Hummer, no, oddly enough, it looked like an olive drab mail jeep. That puzzled me for years. Point is, we just bought a $38,000 house for $85,000, and I want to paint it like a half-million dollar house I saw on a glossy placard for Behr paint. At least this time I won't be disappointed when it still looks like a $38,000 house.

It's BSG time.

My boy received some Power Ranger Mystic Force action figures for Christmas. Thing is, they haven't released Mystic Force in the states yet. And I don't know how many 5-year olds in the U.S. have seen nearly every episode of the Japanese Magi Ranger series, but my boy has, despite the fact that he cannot read the English subtitles, nor does he understand Japanese. I'm just curious what other children his age think upon seeing these figures on the shelf, since they have no point of reference. And as little girl loves Strawberry Shortcake, once again, Bandai is getting all my cash!

Talked to Professor Tom on the phone today. Slept late every day. Didn't leave the hotel once today which was nice. Galinda stopped by this evening for a delightful time. Watched The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Scary Movie. Going to Toys-R-Us tomorrow to let the children blow their Xmas wad, and will probably end up doing weekly grocery shopping and seeing Galinda. I just hope everyone out there is having as much fun as I am!

Bought a house today. And really, I'm only losing 2000 square feet, a bedroom, formal dining room, formal living room, and a second bathroom. And well, the master bedroom is the size of my smallest child's room of the other house, but hey, it's close to work!

Yeah, it's tiny.

So my three year old knows the the capital of the Philippines! Well, not in so many words. We had ice cream the other night and I asked if she wanted Chocolate or Vanilla. She chose "Manila." She also eats cabanas and likes to play with air-filled kablooms.

Was at Target today (as they have no formidable Wal-Mart's here) and found Power Rangers Mystic Force action figures. I bought one of each they had. Hey, I was considering having Yellow Magiranger shipped directly from Japan six months ago for about $50. These were $6.84 plus tax.

What a busy, long week it was at work. And all that in only a 4-day work week. Watched Scream 3 today. It was better than I expected. I NEED to buy the "Scary Movies" though so my wife can watch them. Too funny. Watched it over at Galinda's. Speaking of, this weekend will mark the first time in seven weeks we've ever been apart two full days. Whatever shall I do?

Well, enough about me, what about you?

It's cold here. Damn cold. When I'm wearing my "Ear Grips" (which I refer to as "Ear Slips" due to poor design)...

I feel a lot like Lando Calrissian's little gay cyborg friend, Lobot...

Lots of snow today. Little girl was up last night with fever, so didn't go to school today. Lori stayed home with her, so I took the boy to school, arriving at work two hours late. Because of the snow, I left work after only two hours, to trek back across town to retrieve him. The roads were slushy and slippery. Snow was blowing like mad. By the time I got back to the office, I discovered why I couldn't turn my wheels...the ice was caked underneath the wheel wells.

I lost the thumb drive work gave me, but found the one USDA gave me before I left. A word about removable media. If using your non-work device, refrain from inserting it during a presentation to Vice Presidents on the computer controlling the 60-inch plasma display if you keep your son's "Power Rangers" folder on it. It raises eyebrows.

So, I promised this VP that we would provide 10 new Blackberry users Blackberry training today. Funny thing, we didn't receive the Blackberries. Nonplussed, I assured her the training would proceed as planned. I'm having one of my guys pantomime a handheld device for the duration. I can't wait!

My little power ranger likes to 'Power Up' before riding his electric 4-wheeler all over the property. I feel safer knowing he's out there battling evil.

Concerning the subject of this post, I feel like I've moved in and am fleecing this town. Wife has a library card with a limit of 8 music CD's you can check out daily. I've already ripped my first 8 and am going back today. My only begrudgement is that they are closed during the holiday.

Yes, teh max0r is set up and running in Wichita, but not without a few surprises. First of all, I used the 17" monitor because I was under the impression that teh max0r had a maximum resolution of 1280x1024. Deciding to watch Sin City last night night on the 22" monitor and Bose MediaMate speakers over the exisiting setup at the house, I attached the larger monitor. Apparently, Tony's 17" LCD only has the capacity to display 1280x1024, because teh max0r now allows me to set the resolution as high as 2048x1536! I think I'll use the 22" when I get to St. Louis.

Another surprise is the built-in 56k modem I laughed at when I first got the mini. It's what I'm using now to post to you. A bonus of using my wife's dial-up connection on the wee mac is that she's limited to 28.8 at Remote Location Alpha. Well with the wee mac, I'm getting a whopping 31.2! Booyakasha. After my 3 months with 26.4 AOL dial-up, if I don't get some broadband soon, I'm going to seriously hurt someone. And speaking of broadband...

It looks like our T1 has been terminated. All of our boxes are offline. Details are still sketchy at this point and I'm trying to confirm. At this point I'm using http://retrospective.us to host my images. Thanks Dave!

All annoying alliteration aside (heh - assonance), I drove to Wichita this weekend just in time to put the kids to bed. Lori's biological father was in town, so we drove to her Grandparents house in Augusta and spent all day there, finishing up with a quick trip into Old Town Wichita where we drank (in this order) a light lager, a wheat beer, and a stout, while smoking corojo cigars. It was quite nice.

I took the kids to this gigantic park and my boy was Red Power Ranger, I was Blue Power Ranger, and Granpa Mike was Green Power Ranger. As there was no one else there that morning, we fought bad guys across the entire park, keeping up with the little guy.

My 5-year old bought a 1994 Milton-Bradley Mighty-Morphin' Power Rangers board game at a garage sale for $.50. It didn't come with any instructions. I found some online and we played several games. He was pretty excited. Although it was boring as hell, I hugged him tight when I left and thanked him for buying such a cool game for us to play. I can already see where next weekend will be spent...

I turned down Texas Hold'em at David and Wendy's last night 'cause I'm an ass. (Not because it took me 7.5 hours to make the 5 hour trip from Wichita to Texas and it was an impromptu game and I was expected at my folks around the time the game was to start.) Will hopefully play this evening at Tony's, as it's my weekly trek to Richardson to play with Daisy and clean her kitty box.

Apparently here at work they're still migrating NT boxes to the new domain. Us unix guys were brought it to augment the effort several weeks ago. Funny how after two days they didn't invite us back?

So I go looking for album art to add my three Midori CD's to iTunes, and low and behold what do I find? THREE more Midori CD's I now MUST HAVE!

Mendelssohn, Bruch: Violin Concertos

Mozart - Sinfonia Concertante ยท Concerto for violin, piano & orchestra

French Violin Sonatas

Wonderful! Just added to my Wish List. When's my birthday?

I'm going to take Tony out to dinner tonight, his choice of restaurant. He doesn't know this yet. And maybe return a book to Barnes & Noble if I remember to swing by the ADC and pick up the receipt.

The Higgliosaurus Corner:
HIGGS! Returned from a 4-day weekend in Tampa, Flordia. Good Cuban sandwiches, but he didn't try the best Key Lime Pie on the planet!
