2005-2020

Back in the early days of LJ I'd created a BSD avatar for those few, painful times I ran FreeBSD. Wasn't really a fan, preferring instead the burgeoning liunx. One of the few ways to keep personalized avatars from resetting to the default in LJ is to keep the same name as the one it is replacing, then simply adding a comma deliminated keyword for search purposes. But I digress. My keyword-named "BSD" avatar was replaced with my O/S of choice back then of early ubuntu, and my avatar was a play on those ridiculous naked people gracing the wallpaper screen with the ubuntu logo prominently displayed somewhere on them. I wanted to make one better than the wallpapers, so turned to one of the nude models I was familiar with back in 06, and popped the logo the only place that made sense given both the logo, and the constraints of a 100x100 pixel avatar. Some time later, I thought it might look better as a tattoo, and updated it before using the same model when I switched operating systems to suse, then deciding several years later I'd done a slipshod job on the "tattoo" and made it more realistic, which is the one I use to this day.

Having gotten back into BSD, I decided I finally needed a BSD avatar to differentiate between the two given my rash of technical posts, especially since I already have one for Sun Microsystems, HP/UX, and SGI. I run a lot more OpenBSD these days than FreeBSD (though my SAN, FreeNAS is FreeBSD based), but "Puffy" the bloated OpenBSD logo is considerably less sexy than the new Anton K. Gural logo (not the Lasseter (of Pixar fame) daemon). Which I hued pink to match the hair of the new girl I found online and who's origin I cannot ascertain to give credit.

Admittedly, its been awhile since I've played with LJ avatars, but given two of my favorite subjects, still a hell of a lot of fun :)

I was commissioned to make some avatars out of a very limited set of interests (yes, there were a lot of different bands, but 'bands' as a whole is quite restrictive) so I picked out ones that would interest me, one that I thought I could make visually striking with animation, and then let my mind wander and re-created Peter Criss' solo album with [livejournal.com profile] schpydurx as "Catman!" (My first three attempts to use Photoshop's 'Color Replacement Tool' made him look like The Joker's less successful, more simple-minded cousin. That tool does not work well on skin tone.)

So...back to the drawing board. My wife went from laughing at me to absolute amazement on my fourth attempt, as I took a different approach:

And just like those last three above, I never make an avatar for someone that I wouldn't make for myself. I'm quite jealous of that Grease avatar! A while back [livejournal.com profile] schpydurx had asked me to make him a 'writing' avatar, and it turned out so good, I've been pining for it ever since. So this evening I decided I was going to make an identical one for myself, but couldn't find the original source pic, so something altogether different developed! Looks good if anything further I author ends up in the paper too ;)

And finally, Numa Numa Guy avatars (dedicated to [livejournal.com profile] bsdcat) and a poll!

[Poll #1360088]
And since work has officially blocked all animated gifs...well, suffice it to say this page is going look downright awkward by the time I get there.

HOOYA!

They say the best gift to give is one you'd give yourself. (That's how [livejournal.com profile] celtmanx ended up with an expresso maker 3-years before I got my own.) Most of these avatars were from pictures I've been collecting for myself, for some future date. A couple are quite new, the majority I've been saving for awhile. One is a personalized version of an old favorite, and another is a brand new acquisition.

Thank you guys for a lot of fun yesterday!

A MAN.
A PLAN.
A STORMTROOPER.
STUF123.

Unlike a true palindrome, this one reads 321 FUTS REPOORT MROTS A NALP ANAMA which, loosely translated: this guy just rocks!

Thanks to stuf123 for providing this outstanding caricature of yours truly, as Stormtrooper, officially my new favorite avatar. Many, many posts from now, if you require his site again, just follow my LINKS area to ehowton's spaces and his is the first link under my "Custom List."

From his Yahoo! 360 blog:

Steve R is one funny guy - but you pretty much have to have a sense of humor yourself to appreciate him. He's generous and taleneted and will always have your back in a fight. Steve R enjoys soundtracks and halloween and works as many hours as an IT Professional...

I met Steve on The Score Station (where, to this day he can be seen on chat occasionally) enjoying many a soundtrack together. We share love of Pixar movies (ok, he is an animator...) and an overabundance of desktoys. Mine slant towards sci-fi, his slant towards super heroes, and currently - he's winning.

Now that I live in Saint Louis, and have met astro, our friend stuf123 is just a few hours away, and my dream (I HAVE A DREAM) is to one day, meet the man, the legend, stuf123.

He'll do yours for $200 cash or payment in cases of Nerd (tm) candy!
oh, and I promised him I'd say this:
