Vanilla Ice

Two days ago, it was 75-degrees and sunny. That night, it dropped to 38. And last night? Ice! Out of the hundreds of cities which make up the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, our little town made the news last night as the hardest hit location. My father called to warn me. Then, this morning:

Anna Independent School District has issued a 2-hour delay in opening due to weather.

No worries. I send an email to work detailing that I might not be in today and drink another cup of coffee. What with the roads being too treacherous to traverse and all. Two hours later, however, they canceled school! My wife's boss called her and told her not to come in (she has a much longer commute than I do) and I considered spending all day at home with two kids. That shifted my paradigm considerably, and I decided the roads couldn't be that bad, could they?

15 minutes to drive the .8 miles to the highway, and another 15 minutes further to work.

Life is good.

I was stationed in Nebraska in 96-97. I'd never seen a snow plow before. Six months of winters. I don't miss it.

Happened to me in the early 80's. We lived near downtown. Shut the city down just as you guessed.

The first time it got below 10 degrees at NMMI, I stepped out of my room to be greeted by 5 dgree weather. I quickly re-entered and put on 4 additional pairs of pants, 2 more pairs of gloves, my scarf, and the scarf of my roommate (he's from Denver). My point, it's not supposed to get this cold in the desert!

It didn't do anything in my city and most of my co-workers were kvetching about MINOR snow flurries. Seriously, it took them over an hour to get to work. Pathetic.

No offense to you and the weather you had where you live but I wanted to yell at them: "Are you kidding me? I'm from Florida. Today was nothing compared to the 2 days of ice storms we had last year in DFW." I made it to work in my usual 10 minutes but you can rest assured I'm using their excuse the next time it even sleets a little.

Memorable Climates

Missouri: Three months of snow.
Kansas: Three months of snow.
Nebraksa: Six months of snow.
Korea: Six months of snow.

I'll take Texas and our once-per-year, gone-by-noon "Snow Day" any day of the week and twice on Sunday thank you very much. I've had enough of living places where they forget to turn it off.

Ewww. I don't like ice and snow. An awesome aspect of California is that I can see snow covering the mountains. I could go play in it if I wanted and drive right back to snow-free LA. Though like you, I could deal with a once or twice a year occurrence. Just not reguluarly.

Hope the kids enjoyed their day off!

The most ideal climate I've ever been in was in Hawaii. Almost nothing was indoors. Everything was outdoors - open. Just beautiful. "Perfect."

I'll have to mark my time spent in California as second most perfect compared to the rest of the places I've been. "Almost perfect."
