I hate mp3's. I love the technology which brought us MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3 technology though and freed us from .wav files. Even though AAC is lossless, and I use mac, I'm ascared to move to it. I have lots of hangups. I keep increasing the bitrate of my rips, but the quality vs. size at some point becomes elusive. I have thousands of CD's and I usually end up listening to my mp3's instead. I hate that about myself. I was looking for a particular European single this evening, and became increasingly frustrated that a good chunk of my hard-earned European singles were now available in mass-produced box sets. While I did eventually find the single I was looking for (it took me an hour) I came across several wonderful singles I thought would be fantastic to have on hand in my mp3 library:

• Yello - The Rhythm Divine (Such a GREAT, mellow track. Yello is so underrated here in the states.)


• Vangelis - The Conquest of Paradise (think Basil Poledouris's Hymn to Red Oktober vs. Hans Zimmer's Roll Tide.


• Siouxsie & The Banshees - Face to Face (from Batman Returns)


• Smashing Pumpkins - Disarm (I have their debut stuff, it's good, but not like this.)


• Snap - Rhythm is a Dancer (What? I spent some time in Germany!)


• Roy Orbison - I Drove All Night (Got to see him live once, but he put out some great new stuff late in his career.)


• Roy Orbison - She's A Mystery to Me (more on this below.)


• Yaz - State Farm (Who doesn't like Yaz?)


• Orbital - The Saint


• Book of Love - Modigliani


• And the entire Brazil soundtrack by Michael Kamen

Did I mention that I have nearly everything Kate Bush has ever released plus doubles if the European and U.S. releases had different cover art + all the bootlegs she didn't release? You can't take it with you - why do I have so much music? As far as I can tell, prog_guy69 has more CD's than I do, and probably swashbuckler332 as well. What is it we so enjoy about it? Let's talk about U2. I'm not a huge fan. I'm not even a mild fan. In fact, I don't even really like them. Let me tell you what I do like - Bono as an individual creative artists. EVERYTHING Bono has put out on the side has moved me in way which would be embarrassing to discuss in a public forum. I cry. It's fantastic. Even when he's singing back-up or duet vocals - I am in awe of the man - his voice and his talent. But I really cannot stand U2. I do not understand this phenomenon.

Didn't get the kids down until 2200 this evening, I've just had a scooby-snack probably too close to bedtime, I'm exhausted and I have a long night tomorrow. After work we're having grilled build-it-yourself pizza's, the other half of the case of Corona we didn't finish last weekend, and Movie Night.

Bono is a strange person!!!

I don't know whether to like him because he's Irish or abhor him because he is weird.

I love Seined O'Connor voice but I think she is a CRACK HO!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know much about Bono except that he is quite liberal.

I don't think no matter my own nationality, I would like or dislike someone else based exclusively on theirs.

I too enjoy Sinead O'Conner, and would not boycott her on any rumors of being a crack whore alone. Some people won't listen to Wagner because he was an outspoken anti-Semitic.

In all fairness, progguy69 used to manage a used CD store, so he had ample opportunity to leapfrog ahead. I suspect he cherry-picked all the best stuff as it came in.

Pizza and Corona sounds like the makings of a damn fine movie-night.

Cherry pick!?! Me! Okay, I did cherry pack some. Some of the stuff I have was given to me by the distributors and record labels. Also, since I ordered new CDs for the store, I could order myself practically anything in print. I had two different importers so I could get the European edition with the different artwork and the bonus track(s). The first year or so I had 2 or three bootleggers that I dealt with. I probably have 20 or 30 bootlegs.

Sometimes - having that much choice is a hinderance to me. So much to sift through, the decision process kills me!

Mostly I would walk into the smaller CD stores and pick up singles for 99 pence in the U.K. (approximately $2) and 5 Deutche Marks in Germany (about the same $2). I brought home about 100 singles in two years. Full CD's were quite a bit more expensive.

Euro singles (as well and Aussie and Japan) are great. Usually you will get between 3 and 6 songs on an import single. Often they include non-album tracks, live versions, demos, etc. I have a number of singles. Unfortunately, I had to pay to have them imported so they ended up costing me between $6 and $10. But hey, if they have extra stuff you can not get on the album, it's a good deal.

Do you still have all of the singles you mentioned to above? I know you are a fan of Concrete Blonde; do you have any of their singles? I've got "Ghost of a Texas Ladies' Man" and "Mexican Moon." There are a couple of singles with non-album tracks that I would love to hear/have.

I do, and your wish is my command. I have several Blonde singles I will expedite to you. I have the "Ghost of a Texas Ladies' Man" single, but not the "Mexican Moon." Funny thing, that album - I initially was quite dissapointed in it. Not even the same sound as any of their previous albums. Now, however, its one of my favorites. Something about the mood it manages. It's a more mature sound. There have been times, that out of everything in my collection, that alone can calm my savage beast.

The wife picked up some Naan bread as the base and will prepare the various toppings while I'm at work. When I get home, I'll no doubt pop a beer, light a cigar, fire up the grill (as is my usual Friday afternoon custom) and tenderly, oh so tenderly lay the masterpieces on the grill to warm and meld into a fantastic creation of cheesy-goodness.

And...I'm spent.
