Perhaps it was the lack of proper video games when I was growing up. We didn't have Battlefield, Far Cry, Modern Warfare, or Call of Duty. No, we had Pong. Maybe it was because my mother was a conscientious objector and we never discussed it? Either way, I was never curious about the military growing up; and I grew up in a small Texas town before we moved to Dallas surrounded by my aunts, cousins, and each of my uncles who'd served. I never even asked my own father about his time in the military until just before I was going in.

In junior high the leader of our ragtag gang was [livejournal.com profile] celtmanx who attired us all in olive drab and who was well-versed in all-things paramilitary. Still, it didn't interest me. But my son here lately has been downright fascinated with where I've been and what I've done. Writing school papers and dressing up in my old fatigues - most of which fit him these days!

The only thing I do know for sure is that were he to choose to serve at some point in the future, he'll be way the hell more prepared than I was!

Fantastic that your son is taking such as interest in who you were before "Dad".

We do so much together these days, if they go to their grandmother's or whatnot for the weekend, they'll sometimes pause, turn to me and ask, "What do you when I'm not here?"

It is cool that he is exploring his options. No doubt it is helpful that you have a trunk full of military garb and memorabilia to help bring your experiences to life for him.

Hard to believe he is going to be 14 in just a couple of months!

Yeah, he's jonesing to get his hand on a couple of sets. What's most interesting to him is the variety I have in that steamer trunk. Some standard 90s jungle battle dress as well as desert camo in both US and UK flavors. Right now he's wearing a German Bundeswehr sweater and a Royal Air Force "floppy" hat in British desert DPM (Disruptive Pattern Material).
