In some semblance of order:

  • Mowed the lawn, racing a storm. I won.

  • Bought fresh cayenne peppers and more olive oil at the farmer's market.

  • Took the kids to see The Last Airbender. It was way better than I thought it was going to be.

  • Rounded up my own kids, and some neighborhood kids for the next town over's 4th of July show. Got rained out.

  • Took "challenge" photographs

  • Our neighbors (originally from from Idaho) invited us over for dinner on the 4th. I had no idea what this was going to entail:

    • Ate BBQ goat & drank two bottles of homemade wine at ~20% ABV. A semi-sweet peach, and a blush cactus. Holy shit.

    • Dug a hole for BBQ goat carcass after photographing the head. On a stick. As a warning to all other goats.

    • Watched Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief

  • Went to Anna's 4th of July Event.

  • [livejournal.com profile] drax0r and I (and our brood of kids) helped clean up the aftermath of the 4th of July Event.

  • Took my wife to see Eclipse. It was way worse than I thought it was going to be.

    • As an aside, if Bella was topless as much as Jacob was this movie, I likely would've enjoyed it much, much more.

  • Took "challenge" photographs

  • Mowed the lawn. Yes, again.

I'm guessing my Independence Day was weirder than your Independence Day.

Am I wrong?

Did mine make the cut?

Holy Shit indeed! I was listening to the Talking Goat yesterday.

I'm guessing my Independence Day was weirder than your Independence Day.

It's a work in progress.

Did a hot chick ask you to dress enFemme then proceed to ravage your body?
Not yet! (There's a few more hours of Independence Day weekend left) but I'm gonna go ahead and give you that one ;)

You win! Did the idea to pike the goat head occur to you before or after the homemade wine?

A real guy--it's all about the hooters. ;-)

Believe it or not...before. I was hoping the guy wouldn't think I was weird or anything for asking - I simply saw it as an opportunity.

Thankfully, he wasn't just humoring me. He said, "I wonder why I never think of these things?"

LOL! Gee, I wonder why piking the goat's head wasn't the first thing that came to his mind. ;-)

No, the closet I got was some grilled Venison nuggets and Jalapeno wrapped in bacon. Nice and spicy. You would have liked them.

your Independence Day was way weirder than mine. that BBQ sounds like slightly Lord of the Flies with the goat head

was The Last Airbender good? most of the people i know who saw it said that they'd have rather seen Twilight (this means they considered The Last Airbender to be pretty horrible not that they're fans of that Twilight dreck)

hope you're having fun with your photography :)

*hug*

I think I need a goat-head avatar. I took plenty enough of pictures of it.

The Last Airbender was SURPRISINGLY good. The latest Twilight was SURPRISINGLY bad. Fortunately for you, I can back these statements up.

I watched Book I: Water the cartoon with my kids. I was familiar with this part of the storyline which encompassed the entire movie. My wife and I both agreed that Sokka was well cast (the actor who plays Jasper Cullen, ironically enough) and that "Uncle" was fantastically cast - much better than the cartoon, though it took us a little while to get into Aang, the main character.

I was expecting that horrifically robotronic flying beast in The Neverending Story for Appa, the flying bison, but instead got something so close to the cartoon it was difficult to wrap my mind around it. We also saw it in 3D - our first "modern" 3D movie, and wow! My wife and I both enjoyed the Earth Benders at the beginning of the show the most - they made the greatest impression.

As far as Twilight I read all the books. "Eclipse" was one of the better ones because of the Big Fight they spent most of the book gearing up for, and the last part of the book fighting. Good stuff, no?

No. Most of that was written out. The entire battle lasted about three minutes on screen - they wanted to gloss over much of that so we could watch Bella emote over her conflicted feelings for Jacob. Oh my god was I bored. Even my wife hated it.

A word of warning - most of the critics I read who panned The Last Airbender didn't seem to be familiar with the storyline, and that was the sticking part for them. I can't help that. I was really surprised at it.

I took your picture today.

I hope you like it.

i've never been a fan of the Twilight "epic", to be honest.

oh, modern 3D movies are NICE. they make my eyes hurt but i love them. so, if i see Airbender, it should be in 3D? *makes a note*

i'm sure i'll like it :)

have fun with the goat icon ;p

Some critics I read said they were really bad 3D effects. I suppose critics have to say things like that, but I thought that of all the movies to have accidentally seen in 3D (my wife got those tickets by mistake even though we showed up early enough for matinée pricing) the effects of element "bending" made for good composition.
Date/Time: 2010-07-12 20:51 (UTC)Posted by: [identity profile] kat-rowe.livejournal.com
i think a lot of people were spoiled by the 3D CG in Avatar which may be why the critics are calling the Airbender 3D poor quality. they said the same about Alice and I loved those effects even if they weren't as "realistic" as the ones in Avatar. people are just getting too jaded too fast over the new tech *shrug*
Date/Time: 2010-07-12 20:59 (UTC)Posted by: [identity profile] ehowton.livejournal.com
Jaded. Yes. This makes a lot of sense.
Date/Time: 2010-07-12 23:29 (UTC)Posted by: [identity profile] kat-rowe.livejournal.com
their loss, really. if i start getting too "meh" about modern special effects, I just pull out my collection of 50s B movies and watch those for a few days. after that, everything magically seems SO much better :D

1. I saw Eclipse on Sat night with BFF. I am SO GLAD you and the wife hated it too... the people I was with really liked it and I started to wonder if I was totally missing something. Got tired of the "Oh Jake" "Oh Edward" "Oh Bella" love triangle from hell. The fight could have been SO MUCH MORE cool if it had not been only the last 5 or 10 min of the movie.
2. I did not see Last Airbender yesterday like I wanted to. Kids and I like Avatar series, and I know they want to see that movie (and we prob will when we are on vacay) but instead we saw Shrek 4. We all enjoyed it, not sure if it actually stunk or not- but remember, I was comparing my enjoyment to Eclipse, so anything would have seemed pretty good.
3. No BBQ, esp not goat. Just pizza and fireworks with a certain coworkers family (Mr whack-a-mole).
Glad you had a good weekend!

1.) Bella vs. Edward, Bella vs. Jacob, Bella vs. Herself. Jacob vs. Edward, Jacob vs. Bella, Jacob vs. Himself, Edward vs. Jacob, Edward vs. Bella, Edward vs. Himself. *yawn*

2.) The Last Airbender was really very good. I hope you get a chance to see it on vacation.

3.) Yay! Pictures tomorrow then? Lunch at Taco Bell??? Mmmmmmm.

I love that: "Mowed the lawn, racing a storm. I won".

How was The Last Airbender? I did not even know it was out yet and am glad to hear it wasn't so bad.

Did you enjoy Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief? I heard so many bad things about it that I skipped it at the theatres and I really regret that. I thought it was good and am looking forward to more. Maybe I'll make up for it by buying the Blu-ray.

We also went to see Eclipse and I was beyond disappointed. See, I expected nothing from New Moon and was surprised by the vivid colours and sexy Volturi. I should have remember that Edward was back in Eclipse... kid added better when he was getting blown up by Voldemort. Maybe if he ever had to enact Edward getting blown up I'd like that too.

How was The Last Airbender?
Having seen the cartoon with my children, I was surprised they were able to pull it off with so little exposition, using the odd back-story to fill in any blanks when needed. Critics seemed to hate that, but they also appeared ignorant of the storyline to begin with. Then again, I can't imagine anyone walking in cold and not being able to figure it out.

I enjoyed the special effects having seen it in 3D - a first for me. I enjoyed the ethnicity of the races, the James Newton-Howard score, and especially some of the choices for actors which added depth to some of the flatter characters of the series.

Did you enjoy Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief?
While its true I was drunk on homemade wine, I found it entirely inoffensive and entertaining. It was reminiscent of National Treasure only without the heavy-handed acting of Nicolas Cage.

I should have remember that Edward was back in Eclipse...
Best thing about New Moon really. I was expecting an exciting take on the EPIC BATTLE - you know, the one the book was about? Yeah so the movie was more about the sub-text of the book, sadly. Or, how I might've understood the book had I read it from the perspective of a 12-year-old girl. I dunno.

My wife took our 9 year old to the see The Last Airbender. He liked it or so I hear. Fortunately I had to stay home watch the little ones and then consume scotch once they were asleep.

My weekend was bland, hot and busy. There’s a butcher about 15 minutes from here that specializes in goat, but I haven’t picked any up yet. My wife has some kind no eating mammal rule so I’d have to make a stew for myself.

Haven’t had to cut the grass in three weeks thanks to an obnoxious dry spell.

Well, sadly, I had no heads on stakes my whole weekend.

Was the goat amazing and delicious? I don't know if I've ever had goat meat before. I think not.

We just watched Percy Jackson, etc. last week. I found it to be very enjoyable, and I loved the effects.

If you've ever walked the souks of Turkey, or as close as I got, the Turkish parts of Germany (and to a lesser degree the Schwarma of Northern Africa/Middle East), you can get a doner kabob (http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&q=doner+kebab&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=univ&ei=4v8zTK-6G8Xflgfqj7G_Cw&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=4&ved=0CDkQsAQwAw) from a street vendor which are simply magnificent (I think they use lamb, but its close). In short, yes. Amazing, and delicious. I've just never had one that...fresh before.

Speaking of before:

Happy friendship day! [I used to celebrate friendship days in Deutschland as they have them too.]

I have a coworker who sits across from me who is (among other things also in the Air Force when I was) Filipino and he told me his American cousins freaked out when his dad slaughtered a pig while they were visiting.

I'll tell him "Happy Filipino-American Friendship Day" and give him a hug. That'll surprise him!
