How to raise children - Give them lots of love; Frag the everliving shit out of them.

Special thanks to @ProfessorTom for suggesting UT2004 (we love the vehicle-equipped 'onslaught').
Special thanks to @Melancthe for suggesting Amelia (picked it up at Borders, discovered last night they failed to actually charge me for it...)

Booyakasha!

So little girl's computer arrives tomorrow - she's been playing all these games on her mother's netbook, which so far has worked out just fine, except UT2004 which is our "newest" old game.

[PSA] People - just say no to gaming on netbooks. [/PSA]

I ran into my boy onscreen and announced, "Dude, you're a chick?" He comes running into my office to see his avatar, confused, then scream, "But I'm awesome!" Followed by, "I love my chest."

"Those are called tits, son."

"Huh?"

"Nevermind."

Note to self: Double-check I've only shared out iTunes music from my master library, not the *ahem* videos.

Probably more for my link text than the actual address itself.

Bill Gates has made his scholarship fund off limits to white teenagers. The Gates Millennium Scholarship fund is financed by a $1 Billion endowment Bill Gates made in 1999. The fund explicitly denies eligibility to white students.

“Students are eligible to be considered for a GMS scholarship if they: Are African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian and Pacific Islander American, or Hispanic American;”

PortaTech's "barebones" computer - $124, free shipping. (http://www.portatech.com/catalog/viewitem.asp?ID=25350&O=26710)

I added my own hard drive (an old, slow 80GB IDE) and my own optical drive, filled it with memory I had laying around the house, added 2x80mm fans from another case, and as a bonus, it turns out the onboard frame buffer out-performed the nVidia FX 5200 PCIe card I had initially put in it by a factor of three.

Its a real sleeper, because the cheap case and matching 17" Sun CRT & Type-6 USB keyboard belie its speed and 64-bit processing capability. That's right, I was unware the cheapest and slowest AMD chip was going to rival (http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K10/AMD-Athlon%20II%20X2%20215%20-%20ADX215OCK22GQ.html) (if not outperform) my son's dual-core 3.0GHz Pentium D until after I'd purchased it.

$124.

Free shipping.

UT2004 is so goddamned awesome. UT3 is good and has nicer graphics, but its a "meaner" game; theres a lot of fun missing from it.

My favorite thing is that train mission where you have to steal back the missile? That shit gets me amped.

"You are defending" followed by, "You are attacking."

Yeah, not so easy when your son has bots on his side!

Bots are really tough to beat because of their AIM, so the trick is to use rocket launchers.

Also - the purple pulse rifle? A cheap trick is to use secondary fire (the big purple orb shot) and when it gets near to your enemy, use primary fire to blow up the orb. It does good splash damange.

They say it takes a village to raise a child. They didn't know it was French village in Nazi-occupied WWII. We played Return to Castle Wolfenstein last night. My duaghter was screaming at the top of her lungs when my son set her alight with the flamethrower. I laughed and laughed...then mowed them both down with the .50-cal mounted in the railcar.

Good times.

The next question is should I use nVidia's newer onboard 6100 (pulling a full 256MB of memory from the system) or utilize the older PCIe nVidia FX 5200 which has 256MGB of VRAM on the card?

I don't know!

But I am leaning toward the older card, as I only ordered her system with 2GB of memory :P

Quick question, Guru of the Gaming...What could I possibly do with a computer that is still running Windows 2000? Could I even use it as an internet machine???

I mean free is free but I think this dinosaur is just taking up space. I have pics if that'll help.

Win2k was the preferred stable gaming platform during the ME riots. Depending upon its CPU/memory configuration it will make a damn fine gaming box for 10-year old games. If you can move the video off-board with an AGP or even a PCI slot - bonus!

If all you want to do is run email/internet, by all means spend the 8-minutes necessary to install http://ubuntu.com on it. Linux will breathe new life into old components and is damn-near a hands-off install.
