Harold Faltermeyer of Beverly Hills Cop fame - "Axel F" (though I wouldn't expect you to know that one either as it was not only released two years prior, but was also a comedy) also wrote the "Top Gun Anthem (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f90YCdYIADQ)" one of my favorites to this day.
The movie was not only a huge commercial success, but the US Navy saw a surge in enlistments.
