Recently I posted concerning the building of ubunutu server 8.10 Intrepid and the joys and failure of apt-get as it concerned Gallery 2. I was finally able to correct the rebuilding of the thumbnails by cranking the amount of memory PHP is allowed to use to 64MB (though it didn't touch nearly half of that) and I finally fixed all the PHP smarty issues and can now gloriously present to you, once again, my fully-functional gallery:

I have about two years worth of updates to perform now...

I upgraded little girls computer from an AMD 1.1GHz to an Intel 1.6GHz P4 and increased her memory (she's the only one running Windows in the house). Since all the cases were identical, it was effortless. [livejournal.com profile] drax0r and I sure love our Antec cases. I added all the extra optical drives to the old case (minus only a power supply and 2100 memory) as a gift for [livejournal.com profile] onthetrails who wanted a play box for installing different operating systems on.

I also got Joomla working at work today - that also was much more arduous than it would first appear. While apt-get is certainly easier in the short-term, compiling everything yourself is usually more stable. Until you update, of course. I was thrilled to see that vmware's 'auto configuration' of kernel libraries is working, which made the transition to 8.10 nearly a dream. Intrepid was the easiest ubuntu upgrade yet!

And...I've seen a LOT of movies this past week. Now that the year is at a close, let's take a vote!

Its what a friend of mine calls "smart for stupids".

There are plenty of movies on the list up there that aren't smart - Indiana Jones comes to mind - but they're in the running. Why is that?

For that matter, why are you so happy to point out that an action movie based on a comic book isn't smart? For an action movie - again, compare Indiana Jones - it is hell of smart, which helps to make it a great movie.

I mean, praise the movies you like, crap on the movies you don't like, whatever. But when you start bragging about how smart you are for liking or not liking a particular movie, expect to get called on it by someone smarter than you. :-)

Films based on comic books don't have to be smart, they can just be fun. However, TDK has been hyped, especially by the fans, as being a thinking person's movie, not just your standard action flick; it's been hyped as transcending mere comic books and action films. Which brings up the issue in question: if people want to call it a smart film, they must expect to be called on why they think that. My main issue with TDK was that it was filled with the sort of pretentious waffle and simplistic moral dilemmas that you'd expect a first-year philosophy student to come up with, but that was passed off as something profound. It's the latter part that irked me the most about it: that it was dressed up in pseudo-intellectual trappings. As much as I disliked the latest Indiana Jones movie, at least it didn't pretend to be anything more.

I like plenty of stupid films. Hell, I practically revel in them! But it's only when I'm REALLY unsober that I claim that they're anything more than what they are, and it seems that way too many TDK fans were sober when they gushed about the film's, er, intellectual challenges. :)

You wrote this post on 12/30.

Ive yet to see someone appear thats smarter than me in the time between then and now.

You, sir, are a liar.

...and you are a fool who throws words like 'liar' around too loosely when all you're trying to suggest is that you're smarter than me. But I guess when you're accusing someone of being a liar, it's better to insinuate a falsehood rather than come right out and say it.

Idiot.

Is that "smart for stupids" or "too smart for stupids"? One word changes a lot. Please take no offense. I'm not calling you stupid, but that word play was "too" tempting. bsdcat is right on though. You don't have to like it, but don't call somebody stupid for picking up on things you missed. I haven't seen Quantum of Solace yet, or a couple of the others listed, but what makes the other movies better/worse?

I thought TDK was thought provoking. I didn't think it was the best action movie of the year. See my comments on ehowton's previous TDK entry (http://ehowton.livejournal.com/235828.html), which I did not get a reply on(I was a little late posting.)
