[livejournal.com profile] ehowton: "I'd like a 2GB iPod Shuffle please."
Wal-Mart: "We're out."
Best Buy: "We're out."
Circuit City: "We only carry the 1GB in-store, but can order it for you."
Office Depot: "We don't carry the iPod."
[livejournal.com profile] ehowton: "But you have heard of it? Apple? The best selling mp3 player...on the planet?
Office Depot: "Yes, we've heard of it. We carry the Zune, the second-best selling mp3 player."
[livejournal.com profile] ehowton: "No, its not. That was a marketing ploy by Microsoft intended to generate interest in their product. Do you actually *know* anyone who owns a Zune?"
Office Depot: ..."They sell iPods at Best Buy next door."
Target: "What color would you like?"
[livejournal.com profile] ehowton: "Any color but silver."
Target: "We only have four, and they're all silver."
[livejournal.com profile] ehowton: "Perfect! I'll take one."

My wife asked for an mp3 player approximately 12-hours prior to finding out that they are not allowed at work. Because we've always done it that way, that's why. Yes I groan at the thought of Six-Sigma and Total Quality Management, but I guess the other side of that coin is a place of work which is adverse to paradigm shifts in which productivity could be increased in order to maintain a legacy culture.

At any rate, we spent one long night picking 255 individual songs (she doesn't just drag and drop entire albums like I do) to populate it, and it was a rousing success with the single exception of rather than "Peaches" by The Presidents of the United States of America:

Movin' to the country,
gonna eat a lot of peaches
Movin' to the country,
Gonna eat me a lot of peaches...

She accidentally ended up with "Fuck the Pain Away" by [the teaches of] Peaches:

Sucking' on my titties like you wanted me
Calling me, all the time like Blondie
Check out my chrissy behind
It's fine all of the time...

Yeah. Not quite the same. CURSE YOU ITUNES KEYWORD SEARCH!

I tried like the dickens to get mine filled up. The first night my computer installed an update at 0300, went down and booted into ubuntu. The second night I couldn't find enough stuff to actually put on it - having more space than I can listen to in a day is a different strategy for me, and since I can't really navigate...I finally ended up with a mix of scores and some ambient selections from [livejournal.com profile] time3 and some dance & iTunes specials [livejournal.com profile] galinda822 had bought for me.

I still say the best way to identify them is the 1 & 2 on the little suckers. :)

So your wife can't use her's at work? Well that sucks!

Now that THE BITCH is gone...I am once again bringing my iPod into work. I'm much more stress free and ergo, much more productive.

In this box are two things I will show to you now. You will like these two things,’ said the cat with a bow. ‘These things will not bite you, they want to have fun.’ Then out of the box came Thing 2 and Thing 1. And they ran to us fast. They said, ‘How do you do? Would you like to shake hands with Thing 1 and Thing 2?’ And Sally and I did not know what to do, so we had to shake hands with Thing 1 and Thing 2.

I know several people who own Zunes. I owned an mp3 player from Creative. I rarely ever buy the "main" anything as I hate Kool-Aid. Anyway, what is the second best selling mp3 player?

See, this is where its easy to be trapped by [livejournal.com profile] schpydurx logic - to hate something because its popular, rather than by its merits. In that same vein, using a Zune means your using the planet's most popular operating system in which to manage it, so you've just painted yourself into a corner.

In all honesty, the second best selling portable mp3 player likely is the Zune, but its a trick question, as its 2-million versus one hundred and seventy million sales delta doesn't paint an accurate picture of a strong second place showing.

I don't hate things because they're popular. I just don't think that the hottest selling item is always (in fact, I find it usually isn't) the best item. Furthermore, I encourage competition. That falls by the wayside, and you're left with everyone speaking about how unfair the business practices of evil companies are when they trounce their opponents too much.

Being the number one product makes you neither the best nor evil, but I do like a little diversity in the marketplace. It seems as though others only pretend to as they're more than happy helping the companies that they support continue with their "monopoly" building.

I agree 100%. What I'm trying to say, is that sometimes it is.

Furthermore, I encourage competition.
As do I. I assure you sir, my purchase of an iPod was not one iota motivated by any communist or socialist agenda. I wish there were some way to better convince you of that.

Being the number one product makes you neither the best nor evil
And sometimes it does. Crap products get propelled all the time through creative marketing or illegal business practices. Other times, as odd as this may sound to you, the clear winner will be ... the best product!

No, it doesn't. Being number one doesn't make you either. You may be number one AND evil, or number one AND the best, or even number one AND evil AND the best, but being number one doesn't make you those things.

It's Dr. Evil, I didn't spend six years in Evil Medical School to be called "mister," thank you very much.

I do not have an iPod. I do not have a Zune.
I do not have a iPhone. I do not have a cell phone.
I do not have what I do not need. I have much more money for that in deed.

While its true that money does not buy happiness, dollar-for-dollar, every cent I've spent on music has enriched my life.

And although I wish I didn't have a cell phone, I haven't made a payment in eight years now.

I own a Zune, so does MR. The deciding factor for me was that I was able to purchase a 30G model for $99 (MR's was $79). Yes we bought them one month before the 2nd Gen was released - oh well. Yes they are a bit on the large side - I don't care. I don't care anything around in my pocket nor clipped to my shirt. I also don't wash them, sit on them or look like a cyborg. I also rarely use earphones. I have miniature speakers set up under my desk and listen that way. I carry it to my car (via my briefcase) and listen via the onboard aux plug. It is da bomb!

It does suck that our company gives a hard time about music. I am working to fight that, but it is a slow process. We might not be a fore runner in employee rights, but we have never laid off anyone either. I'll take the stability anyday of the week.

With all the CDs you own and you can't fill up a 2GB iPod!?! I'm using 65GB of my 80GB iPod and i'm missing stuff that I want on it. Go figure.

No iPod at work. Suck. :(

It's funny at our office, most wear one earphone so they can hear what's going one I guess. But it's amusing. :)

I can't fill up my iPod apparently. And I have books and movies on it too. Tim just got a 160G iPod for his birthday. What do you do with that much music? Or books? o_o
Date/Time: 2008-06-13 11:26 (UTC)Posted by: [identity profile] ehowton.livejournal.com
See - the versatility that Apple offers fits different strategies. And while I think it would be neat to have a 160GB iPod - in which to tote around my entire collection and be able to have a means to navigate it (and I'd likely delve [livejournal.com profile] swashbuckler332-like into obsessive ID3 tags in order to minimize fruitless searches) what I require is instead the worlds smallest mp3 player in which I can clip and go. I wear it at work all day long.

I couldn't "wear" a 160GB iPod in as unobtrusive a manner.
