Tolerance

I'm growing increasingly frustrated with either my computer, my operating system, my browser, or all three. I mentioned earlier that I was in the market for another gigabyte of memory for my aging XP box. Its just that...well, my laptop has 2GB of RAM and suffers from the same ailment here recently, that being Firefox is starting to piss me off!

If I want to "Stop loading this page" why does the Stop button only work once the page has completely loaded? Sometimes clearing out my browser cache will speed up downloading images, but just WTF is Firefox doing that it requires upwards of 30 seconds to download a 500kb file? Perhaps its just these last few point updates to Version 2 which is the cause of my consternation? Maybe everything will be sorted in Version 3.

I've turned over Safari to my wife for her internet activities, so I'm now testing Opera. If it really is as light and as fast as they say it is, I'll quickly be able to tell where the problem lies. Of course Opera's not exactly for rocket scientists. The instructions to get spell-checking to work are inane and childish: "Install GNU spell and restart your browser." I did. It still didn't work.

Firefox has its strengths, and I'm not giving up on it. I'm just...testing the waters. I don't like being angry all the time. And if I think my XP box is slowing down, getting my mac up and running again is going to push me over the edge. I can't tolerate much more of this.

I'm not a big fan of tolerance.

I do not believe that we, as a nation, nay, as a people should be forced to accept things our instinct screams at us to shun. Stereotypes are not evil fabrications, rather inappropriate generalizations. The difference being the propagation of repeatable, recordable idiosyncrasies or traits. I don't want to be tolerant of things which I believe may harm me. But that's ok, because in this day and age, you have to tolerate my intolerance! How wonderfully flawed.

I feel tolerance is even antithetical to the bible. So you have God, who is clearly a badass, smiting entire nations for going astray,¹ threating the same for those who choose to follow anyone else or stray from His law for four generations for disobeying His Word,² and making very clear that He and He alone is the Supreme Being of the universe.³

Along comes Jesus - crafted from a 1000-year-old amalgamation of identical pagan personages preaching what? "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."⁴ And once the authors have established that, they continue with, "Judge not, that ye be not judged."⁵ thus begins a long line of both tossing out Old Testament law in favor of teaching tolerance and introducing spiritual exclusivity which in a humorous twist of fate, makes them the very thing they wish to destroy.

Tolerance, real tolerance, is not about disagreeing with they way another person chooses to live their life, its agreeing that every one should choose for themselves how to live. I have another word for that: Liberty.

I'm glad to hear that you are testing the waters. I know that Firefox does take its time on certain pages just as IE does.

I am forced to use IE at work. What I can't figure out is why when I click on the stop button because I'm tired of waiting on a page that the page I'm still viewing disappears. The whole point of the stop button is to keep me where I am especially when there's no transition taking place.

The only time that I've gotten the spell checker in Opera to work is when I was running on Ubuntu...I've went back and forth on this issue. I like how Opera keeps the spell check as a separate entity, thus holding to the Unix principal of a tool does one thing and does it well. Of course, when you consider that Opera will act as a POP/IMAP client, an news/RSS reader, an IRC client, a Bit Torrent client and can be voice activated, I don't get why they don't just include the spell checker. Maybe it's the spell checker that is making Firefox slow.

What you're going to find with Windows is that the only thing that will make the OS work faster is if you perform a serious upgrade to all your hardware. What I mean is replace the mobo, processor and buy more and faster memory. Of course, having a nice snappy drive helps too, but as SCSI is extinct on the desktop...

My 10,000rpm SATA harddrive, though aging, is still faster than probably 90% of the consumer desktops I could purchase if I were to do so, and I don't think my slowdowns are related to the speed of my 3200 dual-channel DDR on an 800MHhz FSB, but I could be mistaken.

Your comment was quite beneficial to me this morning, as I began to download a torrent file, and instead of a dialog box, my Opera froze up for several seconds and it showed up on my 'Transfers' tab.

I have a bit torrent client.

I have Safari and Firefox on my Mac mini....I use only Safari. I haven't liked Firefox much the few times I did use it.

Liberty - that's a fantastic word! I too agree that every person has the right to live their life the way they choose. I have always hated having others believes forced down my throat. Or being judged by the way I live.

I know I was pushing Firefox on you - but since Safari now has incorporated spell-checking & and a non-retarded "Find" function, I can no longer remember why I'm not using it exclusively. Also, Safari is now available for Windows too.

I'm tired of giving up my personal liberties so that others won't be offended. That offends me! Whatever shall I do about that?

You're right I think... about the true tolerance being liberty. :-) I would actually be curious to know what moms opinion would be. However I am willing to bet $5 that she wouldn't tell you her true opinion to your "face". She prefers to converse it with me, then pull bits and pieces of the opinion to formulate a comment many times.

I don't think I have read any truer words in a long time. Tolerance (ney Liberty) is something I strive to teach my children. Judging from my teen years through now, it will not show up in their character for a few more years!

Sorry about your computer woes. I hate f'ing around with boxes, I want it to work NOW! I have some spare RAM laying around. Let me look at the specs, if you can use it in your XP box it is yours.

Thank you for the kind words. I don't know why I was so angry yesterday, but it seems to have permeated my day today as well. This is very unusual for me. A lot of people don't blog when they are angry - and I shouldn't have, but I was tricked into it by galinda822! Not that I blame her, we are each responsible for our own actions.

I appreciate the offer of RAM. I too have sticks of this, that, and the other laying around - none of which are dual-channel PC3200 DDR 512k sticks. Gah!

Lastly, I love your avatar. Did you make it yourself? It looks like it was hyper-saturated and rendered with clouds. Its very nice.

Dang these sticks are PC2100. I keep hoping to find someone who can use them. I have (4) 512 sticks. I hate to toss them.

I have been in a mood lately. I think it has to do with the girls leaving. I am sad, but keeping expressing anger. I guess it is safer that way. and I wonder why my teens can't show their true feelings. It too has permeated everything. I don't even want to be near me right now.
