Professionalism is professionalism, which is an issue that is true regardless of a person's orientation. I just don't really understand why people should have to pretend that they're something that they're not, particularly if they're perfectly good at their job. Even in the example you related, the story boils down to one guy feeling uncomfortable about another guy because of the other guy's personal life. I'm sorry, the inability to deal with somebody having different tastes than yourself is a basic human failing, military or no.
