In episode 110 of Southpark the children put on a happy, non-offensive, non-denominational Christmas Play, with music and lyrics by New York minimalist composer, Philip Glass. As you can expect, it was horrific. The children stood on the stage, milling around and turning while colored atmospheric lights pulse on and off to Philip Glass' score while an ominous voice-over chants, "As I turn and look into the sun, the rays burn my eyes; How like a turtle the sun looks."

The entire thing is over-the-top ridiculous in the style of Matt Stone and Trey Parker. Wait, wait, there's a star above the stage. That's very offensive to non-Christians...And the audience descends into bedlam.

This came to mind after my son brought home news of his school's Christmas Play, entitled, "DECEMBER NIGHTS, DECEMBER LIGHTS." A musical which was written to help students learn about the many celebrations of December. They include:

  • La Posada

  • Kwanzaa

  • Christmas

  • Hanukkah

I find it personally hysterical that they don't include the original origin of these festivities, the Winter Solstice. I mean, surely you can't please all of the people all of the time, but in trying to do so, it just makes it look silly.

May the Force be with you.
