Once upon a time before I knew that there were such things as MP3s and hard drives over the size of 5GB, I too made (mix) tapes. This was before I knew that scores were actually sold, so I put classical (i.e. Mozart, Beethoven, etc.) music on them for a female friend of mine that I hoped to woo. She put up with it for whatever reason, but suffice it to say that she does not talk to me though I am still good friends with her brother.
And for the record (since everyone is discussing the type of music that they typically listen to) I typically listen to either scores or 60's and 70's with just a touch of forward-thinking 50's. There are a few rap songs that I have heard on the street that I have added to my collection. Of course, the vast majority of the rest of my collection is classical (i.e. pre 1900 music; despite my general dislike for Baroque music, I do have a bit of Handel and I should point out that I generally like Bach's work).
I have always wanted to get into jazz, but my mother has always been against me doing so for whatever reason. I should say that the scores to People I Know and The Talented Mr. Ripley have helped me begin to build my jazz collection, but jazz is such a wide field and I fear that it will take me as long to find my likes/dislikes and build a reputable collection as it has taken me to build my classical/scores/Oldies collection. *le sigh*
