Life

I was driving into work this morning remembering when my children liked nothing more than being pulled around the acreage in Texas in their little red wagon. It was very boring for me to cart them around the house and around the backyard in their wagon, but they really enjoyed it, so that's what I did. Today, I really missed the simplicity of that. I never thought I'd be one of those parents who 'looked back' with fondness & longing. I guess I was wrong.

I was at work late yesterday, so for giggles I booted the UX280P with my external laptop drive installation of kubuntu via USB. It made my naughty-bits tingle logging in. How very cool. Of course with the tether to the external drive, its functionality becomes greatly limited (unless I were to install it directly to the device) but way fun anyway - ubuntu handles wireless very well, and it was just fun to play with it, despite that I had nothing really to do with it once it was up and running.

During [livejournal.com profile] photogoot's visit, he was on a quest to photograph the arch. I stumbled upon this photograph of me quite by accident on his pbase photography site. I was likely trying to photograph him shooting the arch. It was during this part of the trip we were actually standing on the top-deck of the Casino Queen in zero-degree weather on a very windy night, accentuated by being elevated right on on the water.

Kids and growing up. If you didn't 'looked back' with fondness & longing, I'd question how loving of a Father you are. I too miss certain things, but not others from the past, look forward to some things, while not others in the future, and currently enjoy some things, and am crazy in the head because of other things my kids do now. All part of the gig. My kids are what keep me going though!!!

One thing I know I'll miss in the future is checking on the kid before I go to bed.... ahhh...

How can we know joy if we don't know sorrow.
Being a good parent is being selfless, and that is where the joy comes from.

Thanks jw, that really touched me. I enjoy reading to the kids each night at bedtime, and I know that's going to be something I miss. I enjoy that time with them.

When apples still grow in November
When blossoms still bloom from each tree,
When leaves are still green in December,
It's then that our land will be free.
I wander her hills and her valleys,
And still through my sorrow I see
A land that has never known freedom
And only her rivers run free.

I drink to the death of her manhood,
Those men who would rather have died
Than to live in the cold chains of bondage,
To bring back their rights were denied.
Oh were are you now when we need you,
What burns where the flame used to be,
Are ye gone like the snows of last winter,
And will only our rivers run free.

How sweet is life but we're crying
How mellow the wine that were dry,
How fragrant the rose, but it's dying,
How gentle the wind but it sighs.
What good is in youth when it's aging,
What joy is in eyes that can't see,
When there's sorrow and sunshine and flowers,
And still only our rivers run free.

Aw! Look how cute the kids are...they're so little!!!!
I've always heard parents say that kids grow up to quick. I guess you're finding out it's true.

Glad you were able to find something to keep you occupied last night while being stuck at work!

[identity profile] ehowton.livejournal.com 2007-02-16 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sure that the things they do now, I'll miss later, much as I miss the things they did then, now. It's a no-win situation.

[identity profile] galinda822.livejournal.com 2007-02-16 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Enjoy every moment!!!

[identity profile] jaceman.livejournal.com 2007-02-16 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
wagons = cool
having children = envious JaceMan
KDE = sucks!
photography = cool
oh so stylish clothes = uhm, yeah... sure I guess!

[identity profile] ehowton.livejournal.com 2007-02-16 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Wagons are cool, but not usually when your carting children around the acreage...until you look back on it later with longing. You're welcome to come play Playstation games with my boy and Polly Pockets with my girl anytime. KDE sucks, agreed, but its better than many of the alternatives out there currently. Someday, I'll have my Canon S3 and then I'll really show you some pictures. Oh yeah, and:

Warm clothes on a below freezing day = Priceless!

[identity profile] schpydurx.livejournal.com 2007-02-17 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes simplicity is the best. Love each and every moment with your children; they won't be kids for long.

That last shot of you looks like Spielberg.

[identity profile] ehowton.livejournal.com 2007-02-17 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Simplicity is fleeting. Its sad.

[identity profile] schpydurx.livejournal.com 2007-02-17 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
and silence is golden.

Simplicity is fleeting. Its sad.
Maybe it's because due to today's sophistication, we try a more complex solution first.

[identity profile] ehowton.livejournal.com 2007-02-17 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
Good point.

[identity profile] snapper521.livejournal.com 2007-02-17 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
Kids: I thought she was older then him... meh anyway doesnt matter.

The little Vaio thingy is kool... I sorta like Vaio. Aside from the fact that they cost so stinkin' much.

Got my computer back so I'm officially an XP brat. Lisa yelled at me through Dad and said I have to much shit on the computer. *frown* No I dont... she only thinks I do because she rebooted it from a really old "floppy" she had of our basic set up files. And at that time I DID have to much stuff on it, but since then (2 yr) I've learned how to not have so much stuff... if that makes sense. *frown* I dont know whatever. Unless she SHOWS me what the flip she's talking about I dont know. I mean the woman could be scolding me for having one to many music files on here or somthing. Which btw I dont even KEEP music on this pc... grrr...*scowl* Whatever. Everytime we go down there, she yells at me for somthing. And it's always stuff I didn't do!!

If I told Tomas he'd "yell" at me to and tell me "well you probably DO have to much shit on your computer! Remember a little bit of knowledge is very dangerous!!"

Grrr...

However. I'm happy to have my computer back. Oviously since I'm on it at this late hour.

Also doing homework and eating chicken. Yummy. *grin*

[identity profile] ehowton.livejournal.com 2007-02-17 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
She's 4, he's 7.

The UX280P is $2000.

Congratulations on getting your computer back.

Tomas is a little high-strung.

Grrr...

I know you are. Your life is now complete again.

Wife made a fantastic dinner today which included chicken as well.

Have a good night.

[identity profile] snapper521.livejournal.com 2007-02-17 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
Kids: I assumed as much. They looked about those ages in the pic. Maybe a bit younger.

Aren't wives wonder-ful-ish-ness?! *grin*

"Have a good night." :-) You to.

[identity profile] ehowton.livejournal.com 2007-02-17 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
Good eye. That picture is two and a half years old.

[identity profile] snapper521.livejournal.com 2007-02-18 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
Really. Kool. *smile*

I went to class awhile ago and Mike (student) was walking around having everyone guess his weight, then writing it down and going to the next guy. He did me someplace in the middle (be nice) and I nailed it. He was floored. Couldnt understand how I could have guessed his weight and height that specifically. Even went so far as to ask if I had secretly talked to a family member to find out his physical measurements. *laugh*

Told him no... I just got talent.

[identity profile] schpydurx.livejournal.com 2007-02-17 09:59 am (UTC)(link)
Aren't wives wonder-ful-ish-ness?! *grin*
I'll have to ask my future wife about this.

[identity profile] snapper521.livejournal.com 2007-02-18 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
Haha!! Your assuming that you'll have one, and that if you land someone that they wont poison you in your sleep or somthing.

You know Carbon Monoxide is deadly...

[identity profile] schpydurx.livejournal.com 2007-02-17 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
Tomas is a little high-strung.
Fuck you.

[identity profile] melancthe.livejournal.com 2007-02-17 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
Fuck you.

You man-slut, you. :)

[identity profile] schpydurx.livejournal.com 2007-02-17 11:43 am (UTC)(link)
You know it, baby!

[identity profile] ehowton.livejournal.com 2007-02-17 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
T.J. Hicks: See this ring? Topaz, my mother's birthstone. Know where I got the money for it?
Deuce Bigalow: Where?
T.J. Hicks: Man-whoring! See this keychain? Mini yo-yo. Know where I got the money for it?
Deuce Bigalow: Man-whoring?
T.J. Hicks: Stock market! But I got the money for the stock market from man-whoring.

And right there, ladies and gentlemen is all the proof I will ever need to provide.

Thanks for playing.

[identity profile] schpydurx.livejournal.com 2007-02-17 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
cute.

[identity profile] snapper521.livejournal.com 2007-02-18 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
Haha. It's the truth... You are high strung, and like a normal italian you fly off the handle. And are really emotional at times.

Don't get me wrong, luv ya dearly, but just saying.

*smirk*

[identity profile] snapper521.livejournal.com 2007-02-19 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
You'll have that my dear.

Sign of a true friend is if they will be truely honest with you about both your good personality traits and your bad.

[identity profile] celtmanx.livejournal.com 2007-02-17 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
They do grow up quick don't they!!!

Well at least I won't have to be cleaning my guns on Friday nights in a few years like some people will!!!

[identity profile] ehowton.livejournal.com 2007-02-17 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
The picture of your eldest holding the newborn drove that point home.

[identity profile] schpydurx.livejournal.com 2007-02-17 09:55 am (UTC)(link)
Because of the flag that your boy is holding, I somehow take pride in this picture over our Great Nation. To me, this photo is a great cross-section of the nation and it makes me proud to be an American.

[identity profile] ehowton.livejournal.com 2007-02-17 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad you like it. That was 4th of July weekend out at my great-uncle's cabin on Lake Kiowa in Texas two and half years ago. He could pick out the Texas flag then too.

[identity profile] melancthe.livejournal.com 2007-02-17 11:22 am (UTC)(link)
The picture of your kids is incredibly cute.

And the last pic should definitely be an icon.

[identity profile] ehowton.livejournal.com 2007-02-17 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. I think that last one would be most difficult to iconize for use as an avatar; the out-of-focus colors of the backdrop (which IMHO helps make the picture) would, at that size, become unintelligible if included. I'll play around with it nonetheless and see if I can come up with anything creative.

[identity profile] melancthe.livejournal.com 2007-02-18 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe something with nom-standard colours?

[identity profile] ehowton.livejournal.com 2007-02-18 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
You do have an eye. Thank you so much for the avatar.

[identity profile] schpydurx.livejournal.com 2007-02-18 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
I wished I had a girlfriend who was as creative as that artistically.

[identity profile] ehowton.livejournal.com 2007-02-18 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
And did your wish come true? Why do no longer wish it? Did you discover artistically creative girlfriends are real firecrackers? Why do you always do this to me and tell me only half the story?

[identity profile] schpydurx.livejournal.com 2007-02-18 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
because it's much more fun (to me) to keep you in the dark.

[identity profile] ehowton.livejournal.com 2007-02-18 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Aha! In that case, might I suggest not bringing up topics you don't wish to discuss. That way we don't waste each other's time. Thanks.

[identity profile] schpydurx.livejournal.com 2007-02-18 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
You can suggest it, but I don't think it will do either of us much good.

[identity profile] melancthe.livejournal.com 2007-02-18 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
It's so cute when the two of you bicker.

[identity profile] schpydurx.livejournal.com 2007-02-18 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
It's also enjoyable chatting with those you care about. Know what I mean?

[identity profile] melancthe.livejournal.com 2007-02-19 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
I think I know what you mean. You want [livejournal.com profile] ehowton to chat to you and whisper sweet nothings in your ear?

[identity profile] melancthe.livejournal.com 2007-02-18 09:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yay, you like it! *does happy dance*

[identity profile] ehowton.livejournal.com 2007-02-18 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Like it? Why I used it to replace this one from [livejournal.com profile] photogoot during my D.C. trip:

Image

I keep a repository of past/current avatars on my Gallery (http://darkvoyager.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=7786) server.

Thanks again!

[identity profile] melancthe.livejournal.com 2007-02-18 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Awesome idea about keeping a repository of icons; I always forget about the icons I've had to delete for space reasons and thus never re-upload them even when I find myself with space again.
