Homecoming

Friday night, the boy and I were looking for something to do, so we decided to see if there was a High School football game. Turns out it was Homecoming.

I don't know what that means.

I was then, as I am now, a geek. Something which wasn't popular back then. I didn't play football, I didn't play in the band. I've never attended a High School football game. I was the school newspaper photographer, which one would presume went hand-in-hand with things like, "Homecoming" and Varsity football games. Only thing is, I was raised in a strict religious environment where Sabbath was from sunset Friday evening to sunset Saturday evening thus disallowing any 'worldy' activities (such as Friday-night High School Football, for example). My understudy effectively shot every Varsity game, hence I've never been.

Tickets were $5 at the gate, and the "stadium" was only three miles away in this small town. Boy was I surprised to see not only the lot filled, but the Sheriff's department out parking cars in the field adjacent the parking lot as well. I was shocked to see every socioeconomic & demographic group there. I mean, I knew High School football was popular in Texas, but I had no idea it crossed those lines. It was awesome seeing such a diverse group of people gathered together for a single cause.

I really missed "Instant Replay." A great run would be played, and I would wait to see it again. It never happened.

Behind me, a new forum member was kind enough to explain things to me like, "Drill Team" (who are the girls in the sparkley clothes and what do they do?), "Color Guard" (the dudes who half-heartedly wave the flags), and of course the timing and movement of the Marching Band.

It was fun, I think I'll go again sometime.

I went to a football game once when I was in high school, my school was too small to have our own, but it was pretty big in surrounding towns. At first glance might peg me as being less geeky than you, until you hear the reason I went. The following exchange illustrates:

"So what position does $guy_lyz_had_crush_on play?"
"Erm, uh, the clarinet"

You had me at 'once.'

Glad to hear you enjoyed this new "experience"! Friday night football games were the ONLY thing to do in the small town I grew up in. It was the social event of the week. Especially Homecoming!!!!

I wasn't popular enough to actually know any of the football players or cheerleaders but I had several friends in the Drill Team, Color Guard and the Band!!!!!

Yes, believe it or not, in High School I was a nerd - geek, whatever you wanna call it!
I didn't "blossom" until afterwards. :)

I'm still waiting to blossom.

are your parents, if they are still alive, still active in that religion?

No ma'am. When things dissolved around 1995, so did they.

I must tell you, it was quite a sight to see! I do think [livejournal.com profile] ehowton made the game for me. It was fun watching him ask questions about the band and the "sparkley girls".

I was a nerd-in-hiding in HS, so I attended all the games. I even watched them. One must have "friends" and skills to socialize amongst their classmates.

The sparkley girls were pretty.

Good for you on emulating humans! That's likely an invaluable skillset. I'll tell you, out of my group, I am the social one. Scary, huh? We're like the A-Team. They call me "Faceman."

Almost a week later, and this still makes me giggle

What? All I'm saying is you don't see something like that in everyday life.

Homecoming is a big deal in high school. I never went the games, but I did go to the boring dances. Small town football is a huge thing in the midwest, but I've heard it's especially big in Texas.

Glad you guys had fun!

To dissolve is to be dead.

That would be my guess.

That it is sir. And great to hear from you!

Huh. I believe that was my homecoming game night, too. I attended the game. I'm amazed you'd never been to one before! But it's not like everyone has always been to their games. I know people who have never been to a football game for my school (or any team for that matter).
