Remember the part in the film where Banjo was fighting canine & claw for the most attractive walrus on the ice shelf all the while fighting just as hard to ignore Ruby? Remember the reaction in the audience when he finally found his way in Ruby's flippers? How they were like two peas in a pod? All that energy focused the wrong direction. I think the director was trying to convey a sense of, you may be an idiot if you can't see that which is directly in front of you and of course the way he pulled that off with the cue of music, the suddenly dim lighting, and his use of pantomime and silhouette right before the deleted scene.
I remember the collective 'gasp' of the audience, though in looking back I don't really know if it was the emotion of the scene or the sudden theatrical break into the full-frontal - I know I was taken aback by the screen being filled with walrus poon - then again, its always easy to armchair direct.
