Captain's Log

Picked up Captain's Log: Fan's Collective Sunday at Best Buy. I found the entire 5-set 'Collectives' for $125 at Fry's Electronics last week, but my wife would shoot me in the eye if I bought that prior to closing on the house. This includes interviews with each of the Captains explaining how they chose their favorite episode to include on this set. So far, the lengthiest was William Shatner, and the most egotistical, in a surprise move, was Patrick Stewart (he chose his directorial debut). I haven't made it far enough through to see the others at this point. Its a nice distraction when I get home since my wife and children are gone. As I have no plans to purchase any of the seasons of any of the Star Trek franchise save Voyager (once their price is cut in at least half) I think I'll start picking the other collections up - though much to my chagrin, I've noticed quite a bit of redundancy on them.

Last night I was in the mood for beer. Good beer. I think its been all of [livejournal.com profile] princessleia2's posts here recently on the subject. I arrive at Fossil Creek Liquors as they have the broadest selection (too broad, really, for the demographic here - their Single Malt Whisky selection is unprecedented) and low and behold, the first thing I spy is a six pack of Kronenbourg 1664. I prefer my pilsner, but every once in awhile, I want a lager that will blow me away - and this is it. $9 a six-pack. Whoa. And not even litre bottles! I pick that up for last night, and for tonight, I chose a pint-bottle of the only krystal weizen I've ever seen stateside, Weihenstephaner from the oldest brewery on the planet (Est. 1040). Its a little heavier than my all-time favorite krystal weissbier, Binding Brauerei's Schofferhofer. Binding being a Frankfort-based brewery (close to Wiesbaden, where I was stationed in Germany) we enjoyed plenty of it.

It's so unfair that people in other states get to complain about $9 six packs. Since we can only buy six-packs in restaurants and bars (and stores that get sneaky about the laws) so any beer worth drinking is going to cost you at least $9/six-pack, and the ones I get tend to be $11-12. Of course it's cheaper if you buy a whole case at a Beer Store. Hate Pennsylvania.

I remember. Worse than Virginia & NJ - "ABC" Stores. I was shocked when I was sent to Omaha, NE; hard liquor on the shelf at the grocery store!

But now the Mormons are trying to take it away from me, which is why I fight.

Could you check your xirr mail please? I sent some information there on behalf of one of our mutual acquaintances.

Maine allows grocery stores to sell hard liquor too, this is what I was used to before I moved to PA :)

TNG price dropped last spring and DS9 dropped last winter. You can get the entire run of either show for about $300 at DeepDiscount.com (I nabbed DS9 earlier this year and just started Season 4).

Enterprise and Voyager have yet to drop in price; expect the former to drop like a rock when they start putting out the HD DVD set (which will only be TOS and Enterprise - as the other shows were all shot on video) this winter(?)

Fossil Creek Liquors is an awesome name. I'd shop there all the time!

Now, now. No hard feelings?! :)

Must...hold out...for Voyager...

There will be a day in the very near future when I own all of ST:TNG. Still waiting for a good bargain. I remember sitting at home after school watching reruns from 4-5, thinking "Some day I will on all these". I thought I would need a huge shelf because VHS was the only thing available at the time. Actually I had no idea how I was even going to get them since they didn't sell them at the time. Now I can fit them all in a 50 DVD spindle pack if I really want to. Life is good!

Hope you enjoy the Captain's log set. What episode was Stewart's directional debut?

"In Theory" (Season 4, Episode 25):

When a female crew member is infatuated with Lieutenant Commander Data, he decides to give a romantic relationship a try.

A love story episode. Ugh, how could he pick such an episode over the episode when he is assimilated by the borg!!!

Speaking of love stories Star Trek style. My wife, who doesn't like Star Trek, watched an episode this week because it started of with Dr Crusher kissing a Trill. I was bored most the episode, but my wife actually watched an episode with me!

In the interview, he explained how they weren't allowed to pick & choose which episodes they directed, it simply came down on a list. He was glad to do this one, he said, because he got to direct Brent Spiner, which was a joy.

And yes, it wasn't very interesting.

About your wife - I guess you'll take what you can get, huh? I would!

The lack of your presence on AIM this morning has made it an even longer day...

Sorry about that - my boss had a prioritized list for me when I arrived this morning.

Out slightly west of us there is a place called Fossil Creek. There is also an area called Fossil Rim where there's a wildlife park and such.

Anyway, shortly after discovering Fossil Creek Liquors we started calling it Fossil Rim Liquors. I giggle a little bit inside every time I say it.
